Medicine Hat Tigers News Release

Medicine Hat, AB -- In a weekend that the Medicine Hat Tigers were not suspected to win, it wasn't for a lack of effort by the 22 men in orange and black. Saturday night saw the high powered Brandon Wheat Kings making their first trip to the Canalta Centre in front of 4106 spectators.

Tigers gave a great effort in front of the home crowd but the opening frame did not go as planned as the Wheaties would jump out to an early lead. Medicine Hat has given up 30 first period goals this season and would surrender 2 more with goals from Jayce Hawryluk and John Quenneville to fall into a 2-0 hole after the first 20 minutes. Medicine Hat did not get their first shot on goal until around the 7 minute mark of the first period, until that point it was all Wheat Kings who were coming off a 4-2 defeat to Lethbridge 24 hours prior.

The Tigers would get a boost to start the frame as Matt Bradley had an easy tap in goal on a 3 on 2 when Steven Owre's pass hit a skate right to a driving Bradley. The 18 year old potted his 6th of the season and snapped a 5 game goalless drought. Minutes later the Wheaties Reid Duke gave the visitors their 2 goal lead back as the overager netted his 13th of the year on a shot that took a deflection off a Tigers stick. Chad Butcher would extend his point streak to 9 games when he buried his 9th of the season. Butcher eclipsed the 8 game point streak which was a team high set by Owre earlier in the year. Tigers trailed 3-2 after 40 minutes of play.

In the third it was a Texas surprise for the fans in attendance as Max Gerlach would tie the game just 3 minutes into the frame. Gerlach was 'Johnny on the spot' in front of the net and pounced on a rebound to put his 11th past Logan Thompson, who was making his 2nd straight start against the Tabbies this season. But all the Tigers pressure was short lived when Hawryluk potted his 2nd of the game on a goal mouth scramble to give the Wheaties a 4-3 lead with over 10 minutes left in the game. Medicine Hat would push but Brandon would not break and held onto the lead, dropping the Tigers in another one goal game.
