TinCaps' Pitchers Strike Out 15 in Win
August 30, 2023 - Midwest League (MWL)
Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- TinCaps pitchers set a season high for strikeouts as Fort Wayne defeated the South Bend Cubs, 3-2, on Wednesday night at Parkview Field. With 10 games remaining in the regular season, the 'Caps are in second place in the Midwest League's East Division. They trail the West Michigan Whitecaps by 2 1/2 games for a postseason spot.
Starting pitcher Henry Baez, in his third start with the team since a promotion from Single-A Lake Elsinore, struck out eight batters, matching his season high set in the California League. After he went 4 1/3 innings, Carter Loewen struck out five over 2 2/3 scoreless innings. Then Will Geerdes punched out one in a scoreless eighth, setting it up for David Morgan, who struck out one as he earned the first save of his Minor League Baseball career.
The TinCaps (30-26, 62-60) gave Baez a 3-0 lead with two runs in the third and another in the fourth. In the third, catcher Anthony Vilar led off with a double. He later scored from third base on a fielder's choice grounder hit by center fielder Sammy Zavala (No. 5 Padres prospect). Shortstop Nerwilian Cedeño (No. 27 Padres prospect) singled home second baseman Jarryd Dale, who'd reached on an error.
In the fourth, Vilar contributed a sacrifice fly, bringing in first baseman Griffin Doersching. He had singled and advanced to third on a double by third baseman Devin Ortiz. Vilar finished the night 2-for-2 at the plate. From behind the plate, he threw out a runner attempting to steal.
Not only did TinCaps pitchers strike out 15 batters, they also didn't walk any.
The Cubs (22-33, 52-68) plated a pair in the fifth before the 'Caps bullpen shut them down.
Fort Wayne left fielder Tyler Robertson was 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles.
