Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

Cedar Rapids, IA - With the go-ahead run on first base and one out in the bottom of the eighth inning, Emmanuel Rodriguez smashed a triple off the warning track in right field to give the Kernels a one-run lead, which would be the difference in the 3-2 win over Lake County Wednesday night.

After coming from behind to win game one of the series on Tuesday, Cedar Rapids hopped on the board first on Wednesday. After the first four Kernels batters of the game were retired, Noah Cardenas ripped a double with one out in the second. Behind him, the next batter, Jorel Ortega, crushed a two-run home run over the wall in left to lift the Kernels to an early 2-0 edge.

On the mound, the 2-0 led was held down by Cory Lewis. In his 12th Kernels start of the season, Lewis went five scoreless innings, scattering seven hits with six strikeouts.

With Lewis holding things down on the mound, the score stayed 2-0 until the top of the seventh. Jake Fox doubled with one out in the inning, then the next batter, Chase DeLauter, added his fourth hit of the night with an RBI double to cut the Kernels lead to one. After back-to-back walks, Joe Lampe lifted a sacrifice fly to time the game at 2-2.

That would stay the tally until the bottom of the eighth inning. With one out, Noah Miller reached on an error and stood on first as the go-ahead run for Emmanuel Rodriguez. With a 2-0 count, Rodriguez crushed a triple into right field, scoring Miller all the way from first to put the Kernels back on top at 3-2.

In the top of the ninth inning, Jackson Hicks came on for the Kernels in his home debut and strikeout the side in order to slam down the second straight Cedar Rapids one-run win over Lake County.

The victory is the Kernels' (77-45) fourth win in a row and second straight to begin the series with Lake County (28-26). Game three of the series is set for Thursday at 6:35 with C.J. Culpepper on the mound for Cedar Rapids, opposite Ethan Hankins.
