THURSDAY NIGHT: The TinCaps completed a sweep of the Beloit Snappers with a 3-2 walk-off win in 10 innings. Justin Lopez put Fort Wayne on the board with a two-run triple in the first. Beloit got an unearned run off Osvaldo Hernandez in the third. Hernandez finished with 6 innings and only that 1 run allowed (6 Ks, 0 BB). The Snappers tied the game with 2 outs in the ninth. But in the 10th, after blanking Beloit in the top half, Tre Carter drove in Jalen Washington on a fielder's choice grounder to first.
TRENDING UP: The TinCaps have won 9 of their last 12, including 7 of 9 at home. Fort Wayne is 13-8 since beginning the year 0-6. The 'Caps are 4-0-1 over their last 5 series.
LAST TIME: The TinCaps swept a regular-season series was Aug. 5-8 last year at Great Lakes. Fort Wayne's last sweep at home was July 29-Aug. 1 last year versus Dayton. For what it's worth, the 'Caps hadn't swept a 3-gamer here since July 27-29, 2016, against West Michigan... Following that, July 30-31 against Lansing was the last time the TinCaps had consecutive walk-off wins, as they just completed against Beloit.
ON THIS DAY: In 1871, the Fort Wayne Kekiongas hosted the Cleveland Forest Citys at Camp Allen Park (1.3 miles west of Parkview Field). Last year, a monument was placed on the site to commemorate what is considered the first ever professional baseball game, which the Kekiongas won, 2-0.
MR. 3,000: Former Peoria Chief Albert Pujols is sitting on 2,999 career hits in the majors. Pujols played in the Midwest League in 2000 and played at Memorial Stadium against the Fort Wayne Wizards in 3 games on May 22, 24, and 25. The 20-year-old at the time went 4-for-10 with 2 RBIs. He played third base in all 3 games. In 109 games in the MWL he slashed .324/.389/.565 with 17 homers and 84 RBIs. In 395 at-bats, he only struck out 37 times (while drawing 38 walks). He concluded that year in Triple-A and debuted in the bigs with the Cardinals the following year.
STAR WARS NIGHT: On this May the 4th, the TinCaps are celebrating Star Wars. The team will be wearing special jerseys, inspired by the Millennium Falcon. The jerseys, which will be game-worn and signed, are currently being auctioned off online at TinCapsJersey.com. The auction will run through the 6th inning. All proceeds from the auction will benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
NEW JERSEYS: While the TinCaps are wearing Star Wars-themed jerseys tonight, they debuted two other looks already this week. On Thursday, the 'Caps unveiled new green jerseys that they'll wear throughout the season for home Thursday games. The "hometown pride" jerseys read "The Fort" across the chest. For the first time since moving into Parkview Field in 2009 and rebranding from the Wizards to the TinCaps, the team also has a new home-white look, sans pinstripes, and a new white-front hat. Both new jerseys are available at The Orchard Team Store and online.
LOPEZ LIGHTS IT UP: Over the last 2 days, Justin Lopez, the 17-year-old who's the youngest player in the MWL, went 5-for-9 with a single, 2 doubles, a triple, and a homer.
STREAKING: Catcher Juan Fernandez is on a 16-game on-base streak. His 12-game hitting streak ended Sunday. Fernandez has reached base in every game he's had a plate appearance. He's hit safely in all but 2. His on-base streak is tied for 7th longest in the MWL so far this year while his hitting streak ranks 4th longest.
ALMOST HAD 'EM: The TinCaps have led in 9 of their 14 losses.
SUMMER VIBES: The TinCaps have only played in 60-plus-degree weather in 7 of their 27 games this season. In those games, Fort Wayne is 6-1. Tonight's first pitch temperature is forecast at 66 degrees, marking 4 consecutive games over 60 degrees.
YOUNGEST TEAM IN MiLB: The TinCaps feature the 4 youngest players in the league: Justin Lopez (17), Tirso Ornelas (18), Gabriel Arias (18), and Jeisson Rosario (18). Fort Wayne presently has 9 teenagers on its roster. According to Baseball America, the average age for a TinCaps player to start the year was 20.6. (The average age in the Midwest League was 22 years old.)
