Today's Game: The Dayton Dragons (affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds) meet the Clinton LumberKings (affiliate Seattle Mariners) in the first game of a three-game series. This is game four of 12 consecutive meetings between the Dragons and West Division opponents. Following this series, the Dragons will return home to play Cedar Rapids and Peoria.
Season Series to Date: Tonight's game is the first meeting of 2018 between the Dragons and LumberKings.
Streaks: The Dragons have won their last four games after an eight-game losing streak that came on the heels of a nine-game winning streak.
Standings: The Dragons are in fourth place, three and one-half games behind first place Lansing, and one game out of second place.
Last Game: Thursday: Dayton 8, Burlington 4. The Dragons completed a sweep of the three-game series in Burlington. Montrell Marshall drove in three runs for the second straight date as he delivered a two-run single and an RBI double. Michael Beltre had a home run, three runs scored, two walks, and two stolen bases. John Sansone added a two-run double. Long reliever Austin Orewiler worked five and one-third innings for the win, allowing just one run.
2018 Team Notes
The Dragons have been the streakiest team in professional baseball in 2018. They started the year with a three-game losing streak, won the next nine games, lost the next eight, and have won the last four.
The Dragons scored 25 runs in the three games at Burlington against the Bees staff that ranked first in the MWL in ERA entering the series.
The Dayton bullpen has tossed 17.2 innings on the current road trip, allowing just two runs. Starting pitchers have allowed 16 runs in 10.2 innings. For the year, Dragons starting pitchers have an ERA of 7.29 while the bullpen ERA is 3.19.
The Dragons team ERA in their 13 wins is 3.36 (118 IP, 44 ER). The ERA in the 11 losses is 7.43 (92 IP, 76 ER).
Eleven (11) of the 13 Dragons wins have been come-from-behind wins. In six of the 13 wins, they scored the tie-breaking run in their final at-bat of the game (bottom of the 8th, top of the 9th, bottom of the 9th, or top of the 10th).
Through the first 24 games of the season, the Dragons have won four games in which they trailed at the end of the seventh inning. By comparison, they won five games in all of 2017 when trailing after seven (5 in 2016; 4 in 2015).
The Dragons are 9-3 at home; 4-8 on the road. They have won their last three road games after losing six straight road contests.
2018 Individual Notes
Michael Beltré is second in the MWL in batting average (.360) and second in on-base percentage (.508). He has drawn 15 walks in his 15 games. Beltré has an eight-game hitting streak, batting .414. He also has an on-base streak of 19 straight games dating back to 2017. Beltré hit his first home run of 2018 on Thursday.
Montrell Marshall over the last two games is 4 for 8 with six RBI, collecting a home run and two doubles.
Hendrik Clementina is 3 for 5 with a home run, triple, four RBI, and three walks in his two games on the road trip. Clementina is hitting .367 on the year with a .694 slugging percentage and an OPS of 1.132.
Reliever Cory Thompson (10 G, 11.1 IP) has allowed just one unearned run this season.
Reliever Ryan Nutof has allowed just one run in nine appearances covering 15.2 innings (0.57 ERA). Nutof has a 0.77 WHIP (walks plus hits per inning) that is the best on the team.
General Player/Team Notes
Six members of the Dragons are rated among the Reds top 30 prospects (Baseball America). They are RHP Hunter Greene (#2); INF Jeter Downs (#11); INF Jose Garcia (#12); OF Stuart Fairchild (#16); OF Miles Gordon (#26), and LHP Packy Naughton (#28).
RHP Hunter Greene is one of 16 first round draft picks to play for the Dragons. He was the second overall pick in the 2017 draft out of Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks, California.
OF Stuart Fairchild was a 2017 NCAA First Team All-American at Wake Forest, when he batted .360 with 17 HR and 21 SB, leading the ACC in hits and total bases. Fairchild was also one of three outfielders in the nation selected to the ABCA/Rawlings Gold Glove team.
Dragons catcher Mark Kolozsvary was a member of the 2017 NCAA national championship team at the University of Florida. Five other Dragons players also played in the 64-team 2017 tournament, including OF Stuart Fairchild (Wake Forest); RHP Connor Ryan (Illinois-Chicago); RHP Tyler Buffett (Oklahoma State); RHP Ryan Nutof (Michigan); RHP Mac Sceroler (Southeastern Louisiana). INF John Sansone (Florida State) and RHP Austin Orewiler (Rice) played in the tournament in previous years.
The Dragons roster includes six players taken within the first five rounds of the 40-round amateur draft, including Hunter Greene, #1 (2nd overall, 2017); INF Jeter Downs, #S1, 2017; Stuart Fairchild, #2, 2017; Miles Gordon, #4, 2015; Cory Thompson, #5, 2013; Mac Sceroler, #5, 2017.
