
Cougars Sneak Past Loons

Midland, Michigan - The Kane County Cougars snapped an eight-game losing streak in Midland, Michigan by knocking off the Great Lakes Loons, 2-1, on Friday night at Dow Diamond.
The Loons (7-18) squandered a couple opportunities in the bottom of the first. Brayan Morales walked with one out, but was caught stealing by Cougars (12-13) catcher Renae Martinez. Romer Cuadrado walked with two outs and advanced to third on Starling Heredia's infield single. The inning ended when Cuadrado was caught stealing home.
In the Cougars' second inning, Eduardo Diaz singled with one out. With two outs, Diaz swiped second base with Renae Martinez at the plate. Martinez gave the Cougars the lead with a two-run homer on a line drive to left.
In the bottom of the fourth, Morales led off with a single for the Loons. Morales stole second base. Cuadrado advanced Morales to third with a ground out. The next batter, Starling Heredia, singled to left field to cut the Cougars' lead to 2-1.
Morales walked to lead off the bottom of the ninth for the Loons, but was erased on a double play. Heredia struck out to end the game.
The Cougars received four innings of one-run ball from starter Jhoan Duran. He struck out four and walked three. Matt Peacock (2-0) earned the win, tossing three innings of relief, allowing just one hit, striking out two and walking none. Carlos Bustamonte posted a scoreless eighth. Matt Brill (3) earned the save, hurling a scoreless ninth.
Loons' starter Edwin Uceta (1-1) pitched four innings, allowing two runs on three hits in a losing effort. Andre Scrubb scattered two hits in 1.2 shutout innings. Devin Hemmerich struck out three batters in 2.1 innings of one-hit ball. Aneurys Zabala held the Cougars off the board in the ninth.
