Cubs Offensive Surge Not Enough to Beat Kernels

May 4, 2018 - Midwest League (MWL1)
South Bend Cubs News Release

Cedar Rapids, IA: After being shutout in the first two games of the series, including being no-hit in game one, the South Bend Cubs offense came alive in game three but fell one run short in a 6-5 loss to the Cedar Rapids Kernels

With the loss, South Bend has been swept in the three game series and now have lost five of their last six games. In total, South Bend's offense was held scoreless for 20 straight innings. The Cubs broke through for four runs in the top of the 3rd inning to end their scoreless drought.

The Cubs sent Opening Day starter Ricky Tyler Thomas to the mound in game three. Until last week, Thomas' ERA was as low as 0.70 on the season. Thomas ran into trouble early against the Kernels by giving up two quick runs in the bottom of the 1st inning. In all, the southpaw went four innings while allowing four runs on seven hits. He struck out four batters. His ERA now sits at an even 3.00.

Out of the Cubs bullpen, making his first appearance as a reliever this year was right hander Jose Albertos. Albertos pitched an inning in relief and only gave up one run, but he walked three batters. Jesus Camargo worked the final two frames for Cubs pitching on the night with a pair of scoreless innings. Camargo struck out three batters in his second appearance with South Bend.

With their big 3rd inning, the Cubs were able to score just one more run on the night in the top of the 7th. With a single and a pair of steals in the inning, Zach Davis scored on a fielder's choice hit by first baseman Jared Young. The Cubs got another baserunner in the inning after Austin Filiere was hit by a pitch, but he was left on base by South Bend.

In all, the Cubs left seven runners on base in the game. With runners in scoring position, they were only 2-12.

Continuing his hot stretch for South Bend was right fielder Roberto Caro. Since being sent down from Myrtle Beach two weeks ago, Caro is now hitting .419 in 11 games played. He stayed hot tonight with a 3-4 game and one RBI. Michael Cruz hit his first home run for South Bend since returning from the disabled list earlier this week. Cruz drove in two RBI in the game.

With the loss, the Cubs will look to get back into the win column as they start a new series in Illinois against the Peoria Chiefs tomorrow night. First pitch from Peoria is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET.
