Chiefs Hand Cubs 12-3 Series Opener Loss

South Bend Cubs News Release

Peoria, IL: The South Bend Cubs have lost six games in a row.

After being swept in the first leg of the current six game road trip by the Cedar Rapids Kernels, the Cubs hoped a new series in Peoria to face the Chiefs would end their recent skid. South Bend turned to right hander Javier Assad to get them back in the win column. Assad, who prior to tonight possessed an ERA at 0.95, has been the Cubs most consistent start all year.

Running into trouble early for the first time this season, Assad only lasted 2.2 innings. In his outing, he allowed six runs with four of them being earned. Additionally, the 20-year-old gave up six hits, walked three, and struck out just one. His ERA jumps all the way up to 2.49 with his first loss of the season. His record sits at 3-1.

The Cubs had to use three pitchers out of their bullpen to cover for the short outing from Assad. Left hander Yapson Gomez returned from the disabled list with 2.1 shutout innings on the night. Gomez allowed just a hit and struck out three. Manuel Rodriguez ran into trouble in his appearance while only pitching 0.2 innings and allowing four runs.

Brian Glowicki tossed 2.1 innings of his own to finish the night for the Cubs bullpen. Glowicki allowed two runs and struck out two Peoria Chiefs.

Peoria was relentless from the start. Getting out of the gates early and establishing a 6-2 lead after just three innings off of Assad, the Chiefs put the game away in the bottom of the 6th where they scored four more runs off of Rodriguez to make it 10-2.

Since being no-hit in game one of the three game series vs Cedar Rapids, the Cubs have scored just eight runs in four games. South Bend continues to look for the elusive 10th win on the season. The Cubs have not won a game since April 27 in game one of their series versus the Great Lakes Loons at Four Winds Field.

Poor starts have led to the six game losing streak for the Cubs. South Bend has failed to get out of the gates quickly. When they have been able to score, much like last night in Cedar Rapids, the Kernels were answering every time the Cubs plated a run. South Bend lost the game 6-5.

With the loss, the Cubs will look to regroup and break the skid tomorrow night against the Chiefs. Left hander Brendon Little will take the hill for South Bend in Saturday's game. First pitch from Peoria is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET.
