Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release
BURLINGTON, IA - The Bowling Green Hot Rods (16-11) kept on rolling with a 5-3 12 inning win Friday night at Community Field over the Burlington Bees (12-13). LHP Brendan McKay recorded his second straight nine strikeout performance, tying his season and career high, while C Zac Law recorded two RBI.
The Hot Rods got on the board in the fourth, when Law hit a sac fly to center field that scored Walls, and it was 1-0 Bowling Green.
McKay lasted four and two-thirds innings, walking one and striking out nine. He did not surrender a hit, and left with runners on first and third due to two Hot Rods errors. RHP Riley O'Brien got out of the jam, and kept the game in Bowling Green's favor into the eighth inning.
In that bottom of the eighth, LHP Hunter Schryver came on and the Bees scored a run that was charged (unearned) to O'Brien, and it was 1-1, but the Bees still did not have a hit.
That changed in the bottom of the ninth when the lead off batter, C Keiner Pina, hit a single to center, ending the Hot Rods no-hit bid. It was the second time this season the Hot Rods pitching staff carried a no-hitter for at least seven innings.
Neither team scored in the 10th, and both scored in the 11th, sending a 3-3 game to the 12th. In that 12th inning, Bowling Green sent six batters to the plate and scored three runs, courtesy of a couple singles, an error, and a sac fly. RHP Tyler Zombro was able to get the three outs in the bottom of the 12th, allowing a run to score, but it secured a Hot Rods win, 5-3.
Zombro (3-0) earned the win in relief, throwing three innings, allowing two hits and two unearned runs (both in extra innings), walking one and striking out three.
The Hot Rods will look to win their fifth straight series when they take on the Burlington Bees tomorrow night at Community Field at 5:00pm. RHP Alex Valverde (2-1, 2.41) will go for Bowling Green, while Burlington will counter with RHP Isaac Mattson (1-2, 2.81).
