DAVENPORT, Iowa - The TinCaps took an early lead but did not score again in a 2-1 loss to the Quad Cities River Bandits, Monday at Modern Woodmen Park. Jason Hagerty doubled home Fort Wayne's only run.
In the top of the first, Jeudy Valdez singled to left, then Hagerty sliced a double into the left-field corner to chase Valdez home to make it 1-0. With a runner at second and one out, Fort Wayne could not inflict any further damage.
The TinCaps had runners at first and second with one out in the third, but could not score. In the sixth inning, the first two batters reached but stayed anchored at first and second. Again Fort Wayne couldn't score in the eighth despite putting two more on base.
In the bottom of the seventh, Matt Adams led off with a single. Alan Ahmady followed with a game-tying RBI single to center and later scored on C.J. Beatty's RBI double to the gap in right- center, giving the River Bandits a 2-1 lead.
The Quad Cities bullpen delivered four scoreless innings and allowed just two hits to slam the door on Fort Wayne.
Despite the loss, the TinCaps went 3-3 on the road swing, playing against the teams which clinched playoff bids in the first half.
TinCaps RHP Robert Poutier (3-2) took the loss, allowing both runs in the seventh; River Bandits RHP Justin Smith (5-0) grabbed the win after firing three strong innings. RHP Aaron Terry snagged his 11th save.
Fort Wayne dipped to 12-12 in the half, 48-46 for the season. Quad Cities improved to 14-8 in the second half, 54-37 for the year.
The TinCaps have Tuesday off; they return to action Wednesday against the Peoria Chiefs (Class-A Chicago Cubs) at Parkview Field at 7:05 p.m., opening a nine-game homestand. Fort Wayne RHP Jerry Sullivan (7-3) gets the starting nod against Peoria RHP Nick Struck (3-8).
