Kernels power past Captains, 5-1 Fabio Martinez strikes out nine over 7 IP

Cedar Rapids, IA - The Cedar Rapids Kernels wrapped up a long home stand with a 5-1 win over the Lake County Captains on a rainy Monday afternoon at Perfect Game Field, as Kernels starter Fabio Martinez (6-2) allowed just four hits and struck out nine over seven innings.

The Kernels hit three home runs in the game: Michael Wing had a two run shot in the 4th, Carlos Ramirez hit a solo HR in the 5th, and Justin Bass capped the power surge with a solo HR in the 8th. The Kernels out hit Lake County 10-5 as Jon Karcich and Jean Segura were both 2-4 with a double. Casey Haerther extended his hitting streak to eleven games, going 1-4 and driving in his 60th run of the year.

Lake County starter Vidal Nuno (4-4) allowed four runs on eight hits over 6 IP in taking the loss. Chris Kersten broke up the shutout in the top of the 9th with a solo home run off Kernels reliever Mike Kenney.

The Kernels now hit the road for nine games over the next 11 days, with three games each at Dayton, Bowling Green and Clinton.
