Broxton Rocks Kings as Hawks Avoid Sweep
July 19, 2010 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Clinton LumberKings News Release
Clinton, IA - South Bend center-fielder Keon Broxton homered to tie the game in the sixth and then cleared the bases with a two-out, three-run triple in the seventh to lead the Silver Hawks to a 4-1 win over the Clinton LumberKings. Broxton finished 2-for-4 as the Hawks snapped a six-game losing streak and halted Clinton's three-game winning streak.
The LumberKings struck first, scoring a run in the fourth off right-hander Diogenes Rosario. Tim Morris lined a double down the left-field line for Clinton's second hit of the game. After moving to third on a wild pitch, Morris scored just ahead of shortstop David Narodowski's throw to the plate on a ground ball from Mario Martinez.
Right-hander Erasmo Ramirez struck out a season-high nine batters, but made a crucial mistake in the sixth. After falling behind 3-2 to Broxton, he issued a payoff pitch that the South Bend leadoff hitter took deep over the wall in left. Broxton's second blast of the season tied the game at 1-1.
The Hawks loaded the bases against Ramirez an inning later on a flare single by Ramon Castillo, walk by Tyson Van Win kle and hit-by-pitch of Narodowski. With two outs, Broxton took Ramirez's 3-1 pitch down the right-field line for a bases-clearing triple, his league-leading 16th of the season.
Ramirez (L, 6-4) saw his ERA rise to 2.90 as a result of four runs on seven hits over 6.2 innings. Relievers Daniel Cooper and Taylor Lewis combined on 2.1 scoreless innings the rest of the way.
Rosario was relieved after five innings by right-hander Adam Worthington. Worthington (W, 3-1) struck out two over 3.0 scoreless, hitless innings. Closer Yonata Ortega (S, 19) then worked around a Martinez single to close the game in the ninth. The LumberKings (13-10) have a travel day tomorrow as they head to Midland, Michigan to take on the Great Lakes Loons (19-4). First pitch from Dow Diamond on Wednesday night is scheduled for 6:05 PM as right-hander Nolan Gallagher (0-3, 3.52) takes the mound for his fourth start.
