TinCaps double up Lugnuts in opener, 4-2

LANSING, Mich. - The Fort Wayne TinCaps (23-27, 53-66) defeated the Lansing Lugnuts (21-29, 53-66), 4-2, on Tuesday night to open a three-game series at Cooley Law School Stadium.

With the loss, the Lugnuts have now dropped eleven of their last fourteen games, while the TinCaps ended a three-game losing streak.

Fort Wayne first baseman Jake Bauers broke a 2-2 tie in the fifth inn ing with an RBI double against Starlyn Suriel (Loss, 1-2).

Suriel lasted five innings, allowing three runs on nine hits with no walks and four strikeouts.

Center fielder Ronnie Richardson added a solo home run to stretch the Fort Wayne lead to 4-2.

Fort Wayne starting pitcher Ronald Herrera (Win, 6-7) allowed two runs on seven hits in his five innings.

An RBI single by Fort Wayne second baseman Josh VanMeter put the TinCaps ahead in the top of the second, but the Lugnuts responded in the bottom of the third with an RBI single by designated hitter Mitch Nay to knot the game at 1-1.

Left fielder Henry Charles gave the TinCaps a 2-1 lead with a solo home run in the top of the fourth, but Lansing center fielder D.J. Davis answered in the bottom of the frame with an RBI single to tie the score again.

Fort Wayne closer Ryan Butler (Save, 6) had a pair of strikeouts in the ninth inning to finish the game.

Lansing left fielder Ian Parmley went 3-for-4 with a run scored.

The Lugnuts and TinCaps play the second game of the three-game set on Wednesday night at Cooley Law School Stadium. Lefty Brent Powers (4-4, 4.89) will start on the mound for Lansing, with right-hander Jimmy Brasoban (2-2, 7.49) pitching for Fort Wayne.
