Beloit Sky Carp News Release
A disastrous fifth inning ruined an initially promising night for the Beloit Snappers as they fell to the Cedar Rapids Kernels 12-5 Tuesday evening.
Despite tallying more hits than the Kernels, the Snappers struggled to convert their 14 hits into runs, while Cedar Rapids turned 13 hits into 12 runs.
Beloit stranded the bases loaded with two outs twice in the ballgame and went 3-for-12 with runners in scoring position, leaving 11 men on base. The Kernels, on the other hand, went 9-for-16 with RISP.
After jumping out to a 2-0 lead, the Snappers gave up ten unanswered runs, including 10 runs in the fifth and six innings.
In the fifth inning, the Kernels sent 11 batters to the plate and scored six runs on six hits to break the game wide open. Joe Michaud, who replaced Kyle Finnegan to begin the inning, gave up all six hits and six earned runs before leaving the game after 0.2 innings pitched.
Ryan Eades (6.0 IP, 9 H, 2 ER) picked up the win for the Kernels while Michaud recorded the loss for the Snappers.
The Snappers started out with an early 1-0 lead behind the exploits of an unlikely slugger. 5-6 shortstop Melvin Mercedes, who began his minor league career with 537 straight at-bats without a home run, hit his second solo shot in his last four at-bats to give Beloit a 1-0 lead in the game's first inning. Mercedes hit his first professional home run Sunday night against Quad Cities in a 6-1 loss.
Beloit tacked on a run in the second inning as Michael Soto provided an RBI-single to score Ryan Mathews from third base. Mathews who tripled to get into scoring position, went 4-for-5 on the night, falling a home run short of the cycle.
The Snappers couldn't maintain their 2-0 lead for long, however, as the Kernels tied the game in the following frame. After two walks and two stolen bases, Cedar Rapids recorded its first hit of the night, a timely 2-run single from Chad Christensen to even the ballgame.
After a leadoff walk in the fifth inning and a strikeout, the Kernels recorded five straight hits en route to six runs to take a 8-2 lead. In the sixth inning, the Kernels tacked on four more runs to take the decisive 12-2 lead.
Beloit attempted a modest comeback in the seventh inning as they tallied three runs of its own to cut into Cedar Rapids' lead but ultimately fell 12-5.
The Snappers and Kernels return to action Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m. in the second game of their three-game series.
