Tincaps complete sweep of Kernels with 6-3 win

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa. - The Fort Wayne TinCaps completed the sweep of the Cedar Rapids Kernels with 11 hits in a 6-3 win for the away team. The series victory is the TinCaps (16-11, 47-50) second straight, while the Kernels (40-57, 8-19) have now been swept two series in a row and are on a six-game losing streak.Fort Wayne had scored twice before the Kernels stepped in the batter's box.

After a lead-off walk, Travis Jankowski moved to second on a Jace Peterson single, and then scored via a single from Burlington, Iowa native Travis Whitmore. Peterson would also score in the inning after he stole third base and tagged up on a sacrifice fly. The visitors lead 3-0 after 1 1/2 innings when Lee Orr doubled and then scored on an RBI groundout by Matt Colantonio.

Cedar Rapids quickly cut into the TinCaps lead in the bottom of the 2nd after Frazier Hall drew a lead-off walk. Singles from Andy Workman and Gary Mitchell would bring Hall around the bases. The next Kernels run came in the 3rd inning. Trevor Hairgrove scored on an RBI groundout from Kevin Moesquit after Hairgrove was hit by a pitch to reach base.

Fort Wayne added three more runs in the top of the 9th as the 7-8-9 hitters in the TinCaps lineup all scored. Tyler Stubblefield singled with one out in the inning, followed by a Colantonio walk, and both scored when Kyle Gaedele doubled. Gaedele then touched him plate himself on a Jankowski single.

Cedar Rapids added an unearned run in the bottom of the 9th when Zach Wright reached on a two-base error - TinCap Jace Peterson threw a groundball into the Kernels dugout - moved to third on another throwing error, and was awarded home on a balk.

Austin Wood persevered through a pre-game scare when he was hit in the face by a bullpen toss, but still started against his former St. Petersburg Community College teammate Colin Rea. Wood (5-9) took a loss even though he pitched his longest outing of the season, a seven inning start, while striking out five and allowing seven hits. Rea (3-6), pitching an hour away from his hometown of Cascade, Iowa, earned a victory as he allowed three hits and struck out one Kernel in six innings.

The Kernels now begin a three game series at 5:05 p.m. on Saturday vs. the Lake County Captains, the Midwest League affiliate of the Cleveland Indians. The 8 Seconds Band will perform a post-game concert, and fans can enjoy a spectacular fireworks show! The game will also be televised live on KCRG 9.2. Gates open at 4:00 p.m.
