Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Fort Wayne TinCaps defeated the Cedar Rapids Kernels Friday by a 6-3 final, earning their first series sweep of the season and winning for the fourth straight game. Iowa native Colin Rea picked up his third win of the season, firing six innings and allowing just one earned run. Kyle Gaedele contributed his second straight multi-RBI night.
Fort Wayne (16-11, 47-50) scored twice in the first inning against Kernels starter Austin Wood (5-9). Travis Jankowski walked on five pitches to begin the game, and Jace Peterson then bunted his way aboard. Travis Whitmore singled home Jankowski, and a Duanel Jones sacrifice fly scored Peterson, giving the TinCaps a 2-0 advantage before Cedar Rapids (8-19, 40-57) came to the plate. Fort Wayne went ahead 3-0 in the second inning after a Lee Orr leadoff double and an RBI groundout from Matt Colantonio.
Rea (3-6) allowed single runs in both the second and third innings, as the Kernels' Gary Mitchell and Kevin Moesquit knocked in runs. Only one of the runs was earned, as Moesquit's RBI followed an error on Fort Wayne's Tyler Stubblefield. Rea worked six innings for the first time since June 14th, surrendering three hits, walking two and striking out one.
The game remained 3-2 in favor of Fort Wayne until the ninth. Kernels reliever Ty Kelley, who had allowed just two runs since May 30th, came out of the bullpen and retired Orr to begin the inning. He then allowed hits to four of the next five batters, and after the flurry of hits three more runs had scored. Gaedele pitched in a two-run double and Jankowski an RBI single to extend the advantage.
In the bottom of the ninth, TinCaps closer Matt Stites allowed one unearned run, but struck out two batters.
The TinCaps have now won four consecutive games for the third time this season, and for the first time since May 20-24th. Friday's victory also marks the first sweep of the season, home or road, for the TinCaps and the first three-game road sweep since August 13-15, 2011, against the Lansing Lugnuts.
Fort Wayne's six-game road trip continues Saturday night in Davenport, Iowa, against the Quad Cities River Bandits at 8:00 PM. The scheduled starters are Ruben Mejia for the TinCaps and Dail Villanueva for the River Bandits.
