Lansing Lugnuts News Release
BELOIT, Wisc. - RBI singles from Andy Fermin and Kenny Wilson backed a sterling pitching effort from Noah Syndergaard and three relievers, carrying the Lansing Lugnuts (16-11, 63-33) to a five-hit 2-0 victory over the host Beloit Snappers (12-15, 51-46) on Friday night at Pohlman Field.
The outcome kept Beloit from pulling off a three-game sweep; Lansing has not yet been swept in a series in 2012.
In the process, the Lugnuts tossed their 13th shutout of the year, best in the Midwest League.
Snappers starter David Hurlbut (Loss, 3-4) twirled eight innings, striking out seven while allowing only five hits - but key run-scoring blows by Fermin (1-for-4) in the 3rd inning and Wilson (2-for-3) in the 8th inning served him the hard-luck defeat.
Lansing starting pitcher Noah Syndergaard (Win, 7-2) worked five scoreless innings in contrast, striking out six Snappers while scattering three hits and two walks.
Lugs relievers Tyler Ybarra pitched the 6th and 7th frames, striking out four; Brandon Berl authored the 8th, coaxing an inning-ending double play; and Ajay Meyer (Save, 25) pitched the 9th to extend his league-leading saves total.
Meyer, a day after his 25th birthday, pulled to within four saves of the Lugnuts single-season franchise record, set in 2003 by Jason Wylie.
A day after going 3-for-4 with his league-best 20th home run and four RBIs, Beloit third baseman Miguel Sano went hitless with a pair of strikeouts in four at-bats.
The Lugnuts now travel northward to Grand Chute to challenge the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers in a three-game series. Lugs right-hander Anthony DeSclafani (7-3, 3.26) starts opposite Timber Rattlers right-hander David Goforth (7-4, 5.11) in the opener on Saturday night at 7:35 p.m. ET.
Lansing returns home on a Summer Fun Day, Wednesday, July 25th, opening a six-game homestand at Cooley Law School Stadium. Tickets are available for purchase online at www.lansinglugnuts.com, at the stadium box office, and by calling 517-485-4500.
