
Timbers Acquire International Slot from Columbus Crew SC in Exchange for Midfielder David Guzman

PORTLAND, Ore. - The Portland Timbers today announced that the club has acquired a 2019 international slot from Columbus Crew SC in exchange for midfielder David Guzmán.
"On behalf of the entire club, I would like to thank David and his family for their contributions to the Portland Timbers over the last three seasons, and we wish them all the best in the future," said Gavin Wilkinson, general manager and president of soccer for the Timbers. "David represented our club in a superb fashion, and it was a proud moment for the entire organization as he represented his country and our club in the World Cup last year."
Acquired by the Timbers on Dec. 22, 2016, Guzmán, 29, tallied four goals and eight assists in 44 regular-season appearances (39 starts) during three seasons with Portland after joining the club from Costa Rican Primera División side Deportivo Saprissa. Additionally, the San José, Costa Rica, native made six postseason appearances (6 starts) with Portland.
"It was a great pleasure coaching David, and I am very thankful to him for everything he gave me and the coaching staff the last two seasons," said Giovanni Savarese, head coach of the Timbers. "David is a great person and was a true professional during his time with this club, and we all wish him nothing but the best."
In 2017, his first season with the Timbers, Guzmán appeared in 25 matches (24 starts), logging one goal and a career-high six assists. Last season, Guzmán logged 14 appearances (11 starts), tallying a career-high three goals and an assist. In five appearances (4 starts) this season, Guzmán logged 349 minutes and one assist.
At the international level, Guzmán has earned 54 caps for the Costa Rica Men's National Team since making his debut against Switzerland on June 1, 2010. Additionally, Guzmán made three appearances for Costa Rica at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.
