Providence Bruins News Release
The Providence Bruins announced today that goaltender Tim Thomas has been recalled by the Boston Bruins. He will join the team for their game in Buffalo on Thursday night. This is his first recall of the season.
Thomas, a 29-year-old native of Davison, Michigan, is 12-7-5 on the season, while being tied for seventh in the AHL with a 2.02 GAA, and ranking fourth with a .940 save percentage. He also has three shutouts, all in 1-0 road wins. Thomas has won five of his last six starts, and has allowed two or fewer goals in eight straight starts, including one shutout.
Thomas is playing in his seventh professional season, his third full season in North America. He was a standout at the University of Vermont (ECAC) from 1993-97, and ranks second in ECAC history in wins (81), while being the conference's all-time leader in minutes played (8,286) and saves (3,950). He was named to the ECAC All-Decade Team for the 1990's.
The 5'11", 200-pound Thomas was originally selected by the Quebec Nordiques with their 11th pick in the 1994 NHL Entry Draft. He never signed with the team, and played two seasons in Finland from 1997-99, before playing for the Detroit Vipers (IHL) in 1999-2000. He played in Sweden in 2000-01, before signing with the Boston Bruins in the summer of 2001. Thomas was assigned to Karpat Oulu in Finland for the 2001-02 season, before being assigned to Providence for the 2002-03 season.
Thomas spent most of the 2002-03 season with the P-Bruins, posting an 18-12-5 record in 35 games, with a 2.87 GAA and .906 save percentage, along with one shutout. He was recalled by Boston three times during the season, making his NHL debut on October 19 in Edmonton. Thomas stopped 31 shots in that game for a 4-3 victory. He was 3-1-0 in four games with Boston, posting a 3.00 GAA and .907 save percentage.
The Providence Bruins return to action on home ice on Friday, February 6 at 7:05 p.m., when they host the Hartford Wolf Pack. The game will be televised live on COX 3.
