Albany River Rats News Release

Albany N.Y. – The Albany River Rats today announced that it will designate Friday, February 13 as "Go Red For Women" night in support of a new American Heart Association campaign aimed at drawing attention to effect of heart disease on women. All fans attending the 7:00pm contest against the division rival Hershey Bears are being asked to wear red as a symbol of the "Go Red For Women" campaign. The first 500 women wearing red into the Pepsi Arena will receive a free red carnation, compliments of Henry F. Clas Florists of Albany. All women attending the game will receive a complimentary "Red Dress" pin, the symbol of the Go Red program.

"We want to thank the River Rats for helping us launch the "Go Red For Women" campaign in the Capital District in such a positive way," said Dorrie Phillips, Communications Director for the Albany NY office of the American Heart Association. "It's important for people to know that heart disease is the number-one killer of women, and to empower them to prevent or manage cardiovascular disease."

The Go Red For Women campaign was launched nationally this month as a call to action for women to take charge of their own health. Studies show that women fear their "worst enemy" is breast cancer, yet cardiovascular disease (CVD) claims more than ten times as many women as breast cancer. The program encourages women to make positive changes in their lives and to help them reduce their risk of heart disease.

In addition to providing a launch pad for the campaign in the Capital Region, the River Rats will donate a portion of the proceeds from group ticket sales purchased through the American Heart Association offices and its local volunteers.

The Albany River Rats, in their 11th season as a member of the American Hockey League, are owned and operated by Capital District Sports Inc., and serve as the primary affiliate of the Stanley Cup Champion New Jersey Devils.
