Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
Norwich, CT- Sam Kimmel hit a line drive home run down the right field line in the top of the seventh, but it wasn't enough to keep the Tigers at bay as the IronBirds trailed most of the way in a 5-3 loss.
The Tigers kicked off the scoring in the bottom of the second off of Aberdeen starter Austin Urban. Pat Leyland hit a two out single, the first of three consecutive singles in the inning.
Leyland scored on the third of those three singles, off the bat of Javier Azcona, and it was 1-0 Tigers.
Connecticut doubled their lead in the third. Curt Powell led off with a double, and would score two batters later on an RBI single courtesy of Zach Kirksey.
Aberdeen trailed 2-0 heading to the fourth, when they would have their biggest inning of the evening. Logan Ehlers, the new Connecticut pitcher, walked the bases loaded. Jeff Kemp then lined an RBI single off of Azcona's glove and into left field. It scored Bierfeldt. Two batters later, George Barber lined an RBI single to right field, scoring Veloz, and the game was tied at two.
The Tigers scored twice more in the bottom of the fourth off of Aberdeen started Austin Urban.
Two singles and an error, followed by a sac fly, would bring in a pair of runs and give the Tigers the lead back at 4-2.
The game would stay at 4-2 heading to the seventh. After a ground out and a strikeout, Sam Kimmel came up and lined a home run over the right field wall, bringing the IronBirds within one at 4-3.
Connecticut got the run back in the bottom of the seventh, using two hits and a throwing error to get an insurance run, and making it 5-3 Tigers.
Aberdeen went in order in the eighth and ninth, ending the game.
The IronBirds fall to 29-25 on the season. Urban takes the loss, falling to 1-4 on the season.
The rubber match in this three game set will take place tomorrow at 4:05 p.m. Alex Santana will get the start for the IronBirds.
