Lake Monsters Take 1-0 Shutout Win At Brooklyn On Saturday
August 17, 2013 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
BROOKLYN, NY --- Ryan Huck went 2-for-2 with two walks and scored the only run of the game on a Jaycob Brugman two-out RBI single in the sixth inning as three Vermont pitchers combined on a seven-hit shutout as the Lake Monsters edged the Brooklyn Cyclones 1-0 in New York-Penn League action Saturday evening at MCU Park.
Vermont starter Lou Trivino (3-3) allowed one single in each of his five innings, three with one out and a pair of two-out hits, but allowed just one baserunner to advance to second base (a two-out fielding error in the fourth). After the Lake Monsters took the lead in the sixth, Kayvon Bahramzadeh worked two perfect innings of relief with two strikeouts.ÃâÃÂ
Tyler Johnson took over in the eighth and got in a bit of trouble with back-to-back one-out singles, but got out of the jam with a strikeout and pop out. Johnson, who pitched collegiately at nearby Stony Brook, then had two strikeouts in a 1-2-3 ninth inning to earn his second save of the season.ÃâÃÂ
Lake Monsters pitchers had combined to walk 19 batters over the first three games of the current roadtrip, but Saturday the Vermont pitching trio did not issue a walk and struckout seven. TheÃâàshutout was the fifth of the season for Vermont pitchers and it was the Lake Monsters third 1-0 victory of 2013 (have also lost four 1-0 games). Vermont has not allowed more than three runs in any of its last 10 wins.
Huck walked in his first two plate appearances in the second and fourth innings before a one-out double to center in the sixth inning. After advancing to third on a Chad Pinder flyball to right, Huck scored the game's only on a Brugman flyball single to right field. Brugman also had two hits on the night as the Lake Monsters were held to just six base hits.ÃâÃÂ
The Lake Monsters got their run off Brooklyn starter Miller Diaz (4-3), who allowed five hits with three walks and seven strikeouts over six innings to take the loss. Gavin Cecchini collected four of his team's seven hits in going 4-for-4 for the Cyclones (28-28), who were shutout for the seventh time this season.ÃâÃÂ
Vermont (28-30), which snapped a four-game losing streak at MCU Park, will wrap up the series at Brooklyn on Sunday at 5:00 pm before heading to Tri-City for a two-game series with the ValleyCats to wrap up the seven-game roadtrip. The Lake Monsters return to historic Centennial Field on Wednesday to begin a five-game homestand.
