Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
IronBirds Wallop Tigers With Big Offensive Night
The Aberdeen IronBirds ran away from the Connecticut Tigers last night, banging out seven extra base hits en route to a 10-2 victory. LHP Mitch Horacek held the Tigers in check, as he went six innings, allowing three hits, two runs (both earned), walking three and striking out a season-high eight batters. Federico Castagnini hit his first career home run last night, and Sam Kimmel and Trey Mancini each scored twice. Aberdeen collected 16 hits, as six different IronBirds had multi-hit games. Nick Cunningham and Augey Bill, two former teammates at the University of Arizona, combined for three innings of one-hit relief to lock down the IronBirds' 29th win of the season.
29 Wins and Two Games Up
With the 29th win of the season last night, the IronBirds have their most victories in a season since 2010, when they went 34-40. The highest win total in team history is 41, which Aberdeen accomplished in the 2006 season.
Help From All Sides
Eight of the nine IronBirds starters in last night's line up recorded a hit, and seven different batters scored. Aberdeen also got help from two pinch-hitters in the ninth inning. Tanner Rust hit a one out single, advanced to third on a Conor Bierfeldt double. Jack Graham, another pinch hitter, came up and placed a ball into right field, scoring Rust and making the final score 10-2.
Brooklyn Wins, Hudson Valley Falls
The Brooklyn Cyclcones beat the Vermont Lake Monsters last night, 6-4, at MCU Park. The Hudson Valley Renegades scored a run in the top of the tenth against the Lowell Spinners, but the Spinners scored twice in the bottom half, and walked off 7-6 winners. Aberdeen maintains a two game lead on the Cyclones and now has a 3.5 game lead on the Renegades.
On the mound tonight...
Aberdeen will send RHP Austin Urban to the mound this evening. Urban will be making his first start since July 5th. He comes in with a 1-3 record, as well as a save. This will be his tenth appearance on the season. He has pitched a total of 38 innings this season, allowing 36 hits, 17 runs, 24 walks, and 26 strikeouts. He will be opposed by the Tigers' RHP Buck Farmer. Farmer has an 0-2 record with a 3.52 ERA. Tonight will mark his ninth start of the season, in ten appearances. He has pitched 23 innings this season, allowing 27 hits, 11 runs, four walks, and 23 strikeouts.
