The race for the Pinckney division crown got a little tighter Friday night, as the State College Spikes beat the Jamestown Jammers 2-0. The Spikes (32-23) cut the division lead in half and now trail the Jammers (33-22) by a single game.
After 8 scoreless innings, the 9th proved to be the decisive. Steven Ramos led off the inning for the Spikes with a bunt single and later advanced to third on a throwing error by Jamestown catcher Andrew Dennis. After Cesar Valera was hit in the ensuing at-bat, designated hitter Brett Wiley plated what proved to be the game winning RBI with a sacrifice fly to left field.
Making his third start of the season, Jamestown pitcher Shane Carle threw seven shutout innings, allowing 4 hits, while striking out 4 and walking only 1. Jamestown all-star Roberto Espinosa (1-2) threw two innings, allowed 2 runs and received the loss.
As impressive as Carle was on the night, the Spikes' collective effort was even better. For State College, starter Willy Paulino, relievers Mitch Harris and Jacob Booden combined for a 5 hit shutout. Booden (4-0) threw 2 and a third scoreless innings to earn the win for the Spikes.
The Jammers host State College tomorrow evening for the final game of the series. First pitch is scheduled at 7:05 p.m. Tomorrow night's promotion is "Kix Country Chicken Wing Night."
