Lowell Spinners News Release
LOWELL, MASS. - From one through nine, every Lowell Spinner collected at least one hit Saturday night and Jamie Callahan and Jonathan Aro combined to limited Hudson Valley to just five as the Spinners won their second in a row over the Renegades, 5-3, at LeLacheur Park.
After allowing a first inning run in each of the first three games of the homestand, the Spinners got through the top of the first unscathed and jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom half of the inning. Forrestt Allday led off the inning with a double and advanced to third on a single by Tzu-Wei Lin. After Kevin Mager popped out Danny Bethea singled through the hole to score Allday. After an Aaron King forceout, Deiner Lopez singled up the middle to plate Lin and give Lowell an early lead.
Hudson Valley (27-30) took advantage of a Lowell miscue in the third to cut the lead in half. James Harris reached to lead off the inning on a call reversal. Harris grounded to third and was initially called out by base umpire Derek Moccia, but after a conference between the two umpires, Harris returned from the dugout to first base as it was ruled Carlos Asuaje's throw pulled Nick Moore off the bag. Harris proceeded to steal second and came around to score on two batters later on a wild pitch from Jamie Callahan.
The Renegades pulled even in the fourth inning after Ariel Soriano led off with a double to right field. After Moore dropped a liner, allowing Soriano to advance to third despite the out, a sacrifice fly brought him in to even the score at two.
Lowell (32-23) responded in the bottom half of the inning on back-to-back doubles by Asuaje and Moore, regaining the lead at 3-2.
The Spinners padded their lead in the seventh inning after two quick outs. Mager singled up the middle and Bethea was hit by a pitch. The Renegades had a chance to get out of the inning but Darryl George couldn't handle a King grounder to load the bases and Lopez made them pay with a two-run single up the middle, pushing the lead to 5-2.
That was more than enough for the Spinners, as Callahan and Jonathan Aro combined to hold the Renegades to just two hits. Callahan (4-1, 3.72) went the first five, allowing the two runs (one earned) on two hits and a walk. He struck out six. Aro was dominant out of the pen, allowing just two hits in four innings to pick up his second save of the season. He struck out five.
Four Spinners had multi-hit games, led by Asuaje, who doubled twice, and Lopez, who had three RBI. Lin and Mager also had two hit nights in the Spinners 13 hit attack.
The Spinners go for the three game sweep Sunday afternoon when reigning New York-Penn League Pitcher of the Week Daniel McGrath gets the ball for a 1:05 first pitch.
