Hudson Valley Renegades News Release
LOWELL, MA - On Friday night, the Renegades had the Spinners on the ropes in their own ballpark. Down to their final out and trailing 6-5, Lowell manager Bruce Crabbe went to his bench and brought in pinch hitter Jose Colorado to face Cory Jordan. Coming off his first save of the season, the Renegades righty allowed a double to left that tied the game at six. Moments later, Manuel Margot's RBI single back up the middle ended the proceedings and gave the Spinners the win in the opening game of the series. It was a crushing blow for Hudson Valley in the first game of a five game roadtrip.
Three straight singles in the top of the first produced a quick run for the 'Gades, who got an RBI single from Johnny Field to take a 1-0 lead. A groundball by Oscar Hernandez produced a double play and left Darryl George at third, but Ty Young grounded out to end the inning. The Spinners loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning against Renegades starter Aaron Griffin, but he struck out Nathan Minnich to send it to the second.
Lowell tied it in the home second thanks to an RBI groundout by Forrestt Allday that scored Nick Moore, and the 1-1 tie would hold until the seventh. With Griffin out, Anthony Tzamtzis walked Nick Moore and Allday to put runners at first and second with one out. Margot's RBI single broke the 1-1 tie and two batters later, Tzamtzis threw a wild pitch to push the runners to second and third. Kevin Mager's two run triple to center scored the runners and made it 4-1. Aaron King then scored Mager with an RBI single that gave the Spinners a four run lead.
Hudson Valley came right back to tie the score in the eighth against Joe Gunkel. George, Field, and Hernandez reached base to open the inning and load them up with nobody out. A wild pitch scored George to make it 5-2 before Granden Goetzman's RBI single brought in Field. Omar Narvaez stroked a double to right that plated up two more and evened the score at five. But the Renegades would not score for the rest of the inning.
After neither team could score in the ninth, the 'Gades came to the plate in the 10th inning and gave themselves a reason to believe. With Ariel Soriano in the game as a pinch runner after Hernandez was hit by a pitch from Greg Larson, Narvaez lined another RBI single to score a run and make it 6-5. A chance to close it out for Jordan started promisingly after he retired the first two hitters in order. Moore's single brought up Colorado off the bench, and his game-tying double allowed Margot to walk it off in fashion. The designated hitter's single to center scored Colorado to complete the comeback and give the Spinners a 7-6 win.
NOTES: The Renegades are now 5-6 in extra-inning games and 9-10 in games decided by one run...Field and Julian Morillo both finished 3-for-5...Julian Ridings, George, and Narvaez each had two hits...Justin Choate pitched 2.1 scoreless innings of one-hit relief.
The series continues Saturday night at 7:05 PM in the middle game of three. Ben Griset (1-2, 3.35 ERA) will look to even the series at one game apiece against Lowell's Jamie Callahan (3-1, 3.95 ERA). The Renegades return home on Wednesday, August 21 against the Aberdeen IronBirds. Great seats are still available for any of the five games on that homestand, so call 845-838-0094 or visit www.hvrenegades.com to purchase your tickets now.
