Medicine Hat Tigers News Release

Medicine Hat, AB - The 2022-23 WHL Season came to a close for the Medicine Hat Tigers Wednesday night, falling 3-2 in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Quarter Final to the Winnipeg ICE at Co-op Place.

The first period started off with a five minor cross-checking major penalty to ICE F Zach Ostapchuk would get the Tigers a five minute power play but it would be Winnipeg on the penalty kill as Matthew Savoie would mark his 6th of the series at just 1:14 into the game to make it 1-0 ICE. But the Tigers power play would get on track as Dru Krebs (Okotoks, AB) would notch his first of the playoffs just 16 seconds later at 1:30 to tie the game at 1-1, Andrew Basha (Calgary, AB) & Bogdans Hodass (Jelgava, LAT) would contribute Krebs' first WHL Playoff goal.

The second period saw the ICE & Tigers exchange goals in the latter half of the middle frame as Owen Pederson would re-direct a Connor McClennon point shot for his first of the playoff to give the ICE a 2-1 lead at 10:50, but Hunter St. Martin (Edmonton, AB) would tie the game once again for the Tigers at 15:59 sliding home a Daniel Hauser rebound for his first WHL Playoff goal from Krebs & Tomas Mrsic (Surrey, B.C.) to make it all square at 2-2 heading to the third period.

The third period would see a quick goal from Ty Nash on a break beating Tigers goaltender Beckett Langkow (Vegreville, AB) just 1:10 into the final period and that would be enough despite the Tigers firing 16 shots towards Daniel Hauser but could find the equalizer when the final horn sounded.

Despite the loss and being swept 4-0 in the Best of 7, the Tigers finished the night 1/2 on the power play while running a clean sheet shorthanded as the penalty kill went 4-4. 3059 came out strong at Co-op Place saluting the Tigers one last time before they left the ice for the final time this season.

The Tigers organization would like to thank their three twenty year old veterans Kurtis Smythe (Cloverdale, BC), Brenden Lee (Seattle, WA) & Dallon Melin (Czar, AB) as they finish their junior hockey careers as Tigers. The team couldn't be prouder to call you one of their own this season.

Next up for the Tigers is the US & Import drafts in May along with the WHL Prospects Draft May 11th where the Tigers will select 9th when the draft rolls around.

Stay tuned as Tiger awards will be handed out shortly with posted winners and videos will be available on social media and our website.
