Tides Win Tuesday's Game 2-1 on Halton's Walk-Off Double
June 30, 2015 - International League (IL1)
Charlotte Knights News Release
(NORFOLK, VA) -- Sean Halton doubled home two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning off Onelki Garcia (0-1, 3.38) to lead the Norfolk Tides to a 2-1 walk-off victory over the Charlotte Knights on Tuesday in the middle game of the three-game series from Harbor Park in Norfolk, VA. The walk-off double spoiled another fantastic outing from Charlotte starter Terance Marin, who continued his dominance of International League hitters on Tuesday.
It was less than one month ago that Marin was pitching for the Toros de Tijuana of the Mexican League. In 10 games with the Toros, he posted a 2-5 record with a 4.94 ERA. On June 5, the Chicago White Sox reinstated Marin -- who was on loan to the Toros -- and assigned him to the Charlotte Knights. Since then, the 25-year-old has been one of the toughest pitchers to face in the International League.
Marin struck-out five batters and did not allow a run over seven innings of work on Tuesday, but left with both teams knotted in a 0-0 game. The Modesto, CA native gave up just four hits and one walk on the afternoon in his third-straight outing of seven scoreless innings. Despite not factoring in the decision, Marin extended his scoreless streak to 29.0 consecutive innings with the Knights this season (five games).
Norfolk also received solid pitching from starter Zach Davies, who did not allow a run over his five innings of work. Norfolk reliever Eddie Gamboa (6-5, 3.22) continued the solid pitching on the afternoon -- going three shutout innings before facing the red-hot George Kottaras.
Kottaras, who had back-to-back games of six RBIs (6/18-6/21), continued his hot-hitting on Tuesday and put the Knights on the scoreboard in the top of the ninth inning with a solo home run off Gamboa. The home run -- his fifth over his last six games -- broke open a 0-0 game at that point and gave the Knights a 1-0 lead heading to the bottom of the ninth inning.
In the bottom of the ninth, the Knights handed the ball to Garcia to close out the game. The Cuban native replaced reliever Blake Smith, who did not allow a run in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Garcia retired fellow Cuban native Henry Urrutia to begin the ninth, but then had his troubles.
Derrik Gibson drew a one-out walk in the bottom of the ninth to put the tying run on base. Christian Walked followed with a single and Dariel Alvarez moved both runners over with a groundout to third baseman Matt Davidson. With runners now on second and third and two outs, Halton played the role of hero.
On a 0-1 count from Garcia, Halton ripped a double to left field, which led to Gibson and Walker coming around to score and give the Tides the 2-1 win. The walk-off victory propelled the Tides back into first place in the IL South Division -- one half-game ahead of the second place Knights.
The two teams will conclude their series on Wednesday from Norfolk with a 7:05 p.m. first pitch. The Knights will hand the ball to RHP Kyle Drabek (3-4, 2.85), while the Tides will go with RHP Tyler Wilson (3-4, 2.80). Wednesday's game will be Charlotte's final one on the 10-game road trip. Pre-game radio coverage begins at 6:50 p.m. on ESPN 730 AM and www.charlotteknights.com.
