Hens Bring the Thunder in Rain Soaked Game
June 30, 2015 - International League (IL1)
Toledo Mud Hens News Release
Despite nearly an hour rain delay, the Mud Hens were able to get the second game of their series with Durham in, and come out of it with a 10-3 victory. The offense produced double-digit runs, and threw up two-spots in three different innings. Thad Weber started on the mound for the Hens, but was only able to throw three innings due to the rain. From there, the bullpen pieced it together to guide Toledo to their second straight victory.
The Mud Hens put up their first two-spot in the second inning. Steven Moya led off with a single, and then a batter later Daniel Fields snapped a six-game hitless streak with a single that scored Moya from second. With the bases loaded and one out, Detroit Tigers' catcher Alex Avila, in his fourth rehabilitation game of the year, hit a sacrifice fly to left field to put the Hens up 2-0.
In the third inning, Durham got a run back courtesy of a Nick Franklin RBI single. With Toledo leading 2-1, the sky opened up on Fifth Third Field, putting the game in rain delay. In the fourth inning, the Hens' offense made some rain of their own by putting another two runs on the board. After Avila's second sacrifice fly of the day, Xavier Avery came up looking to extend his 10 game hitting streak. Avery took a 2-2 pitch from Durham starter Dylan Floro and pulled it into left field for an RBI single, extending his hit streak to 11 games.
Up 4-1, the Hens put up their third two-spot of the evening in the fifth inning. After having an eight game hitting streak snapped last night, Jefry Marte started a new hit streak with a single to lead off the inning. With one out in the inning, Jordan Lennerton smashed his fourth home run of the year to give Toledo a 6-1 lead.
After Weber was forced to exit the game because of rain, Rafael Dolis came out of the bullpen and did brilliant work. In his two innings, Dolis struck out two and allowed no hits. Angel Nesbitt came on in the sixth and allowed a run in his two innings of work. Jose Valdez came on in the eighth and gave up a run, but limited the damage to get it to the bottom of the inning with the Hens up 6-3.
In the bottom half of the eighth, the Toledo offense flexed its muscles once more to finish off the Bulls. Avila got the rally started with a one out line drive single to center field. Avery followed with a single, and then Dixon Machado followed with a walk to load the bases. After an eight-pitch battle, Marte sent a 3-2 pitch off the scoreboard in left field for a grand slam to give the Mud Hens a 10-3 lead. Marte now has 54 RBIs and 13 home runs, both of which lead the International League. Alberto Cabrera came on in the ninth inning to close out the victory for Toledo.
Quick turnaround for the Mud Hens as they take on the Bulls in the final game of the series on Wednesday at noon. Toledo is going for the three-game sweep.
