BUFFALO, NY - A one-out RBI double by Daniel Castro in the top of the 13th inning broke a 1-1 tie and highlighted a three-run rally that lifted the Gwinnett Braves (39-38) over the Buffalo Bisons (37-41) 4-1 Tuesday night in game two of the three-game series at Coca-Cola Field.
The win was Gwinnett's eighth straight victory in Buffalo dating back to June 18, 2013. Additionally, the G-Braves picked up a game on the third-place Durham Bulls in the International League South Division and are now only 1.0 game in back of the Bulls. Durham lost at Toledo, 10-3.
The bulk of the ballgame between Gwinnett and Buffalo was a duel between starting pitchers, right-hander Cody Martin of Gwinnett and lefty Randy Wolf of Buffalo. However, the Bisons broke a scoreless deadlock in the bottom of the seventh inning, as Matt Hague led off with a double to left off of Martin and moved to third on a bunt single by Daric Barton. With runners on the corners and no one out, Brad Glenn hit into a 6-4-3 double play that pushed across Hague for a 1-0 lead.
Buffalo took the 1-0 lead to the top of the ninth, but a dramatic leadoff solo home run from Gwinnett outfielder Cedric Hunter to right field off right-handed reliever Blake McFarland (BS, 1) tied the game a 1-1 and forced extra innings.
In the G-Braves' three-run top of the 13th, Sean Kazmar punched a one-out single to center off of Buffalo right-handed reliever Gregory Infante (L, 1-1) and stole second base. Castro followed with the tie-breaking double to make it 2-1. Infante then walked Barrett Kleinknecht and Hunter to load the bases. He also walked Eric Young, Jr. to push across Castro to advance the Gwinnett lead to 3-1. Jose Peraza followed with a sac fly to left that plated Kleinknecht with the final run of the game.
The G-Braves again received stellar work out of the bullpen to help nail down the win. Martin pitched 7.0 innings with six hits, one earned run and five strikeouts before turning the game over to a combination of four relievers. Left-hander Matt Marksberry, who was recently called up from Advanced-A Carolina, went 1.1 scoreless innings in his Triple-A debut with two strikeouts. Right-hander Aaron Kurcz worked 2.1 innings with one hit, one walk and three strikeouts. Fellow righty David Carpenter (W, 2-0) pitched 1.1 innings with three strikeouts, and righty Ryan Weber (S, 2) went 1.0 inning with one hit.
Wolf pitched 7.0 shutout innings for the Bisons with five hits and five strikeouts. Right-handed reliever Greg Burke (H, 1) worked 1.0 inning with one strikeout. McFarland went 2.0 innings with one hit, one earned run and three strikeouts. Left-hander Rob Ramussen gave Buffalo 2.0 scoreless innings with one hit. Infante pitched 0.1 of an inning with two hits, three earned runs and three walks. Lefty Andrew Albers finished the 13th inning with 0.2 of an inning work and one hit.
Gwinnett was paced offensively by Kazmar and Castro, who each went 2-for-5 with a run. Castro added a double and an RBI. Christian Bethancourt was 2-for-6 to run his hitting streak to seven games. Hunter was 1-for-2 with the solo homer.
For Buffalo, Munenori Kawasaki was 2-for-3.
The G-Braves and Bison conclude the three-game series with a 7:05 p.m. game Wednesday night at Coca-Cola Field. Right-hander Alex White (0-0, 2.12) will start for Gwinnett. Buffalo will counter with lefty Daniel Norris (1-7, 3.72). Tony Schiavone has the play-by-play call on 97.7 FM and WSBRadio.com beginning at 6:30 p.m.
