Santana took the mound in his final scheduled rehab start for the Red Wings, after a 40-minute rain delay. Santana was solid, allowing only one hit and striking out two through three innings.
Pawtucket starter Owens retired the first 12 batter he faced, before walking Reynaldo Rodriguez in the fifth inning.
The Wings were finally able to get a runner in scoring position in the sixth inning after Aaron Hicks reached base on Owens' second walk of the night, and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Hicks ended up being stranded at second however, leaving the game scoreless at the end of six.
Jose Martinez drilled a 1-1 pitch into the left field corner to start the Red Wings' half of the seventh inning, the first hit of the game off Owens and just the third baserunner of the game for Rochester. Rodriguez grounded out to the right side, moving Martinez to third base with one out. That's when Daniel Ortiz lifted a 3-1 pitch to left field, deep enough for Martinez to tag and slide home with the game's first run.
Santana took the mound for the eighth inning having thrown just 77 pitches. Rodriguez made a tremendous play on a foul pop by Travis Shaw for the first out, racing back to the tarp and reaching far over the railing next to the tarp to snag the ball. After a flyball out, the PawSox picked up a pair of singles to put runners at first and second with two outs. But a flyout ended the threat, putting Santana (3-0) at 99 pitches for the game - 70 for strikes. He allowed five hits, struck out five, and did not walk a batter.
Oswaldo Arcia led off the bottom of the eighth with an opposite field double, just the second hit of the game off Owens. Ramirez struck out, and Owens was lifted in favor of Pat Light. Doug Bernier singled to push Arcia over to third base, but Light struck out Hicks for the second out and got Diaz to pop out to strand both runners.
Owens (2-6) worked 7 1/3 innings, with two hits and two walks to go with four strikeouts. Owens threw 98 pitches, 60 for strikes.
Michael Tonkin took over to open the ninth inning. He got two quick groundball outs, then battled Carlos Peguero through a 10-pitch at-bat before Peguero struck out swinging to end the game. Tonkin picked up his seventh save.
NOTES: Jose Martinez has hit in 11 of his last 13 games...Red Wings catcher Eric Fryer has been named to the Team USA squad for the upcoming Pan-An Games in Toronto.
