Pigs Rally to Top RailRiders in 12-8 Slugfest
June 30, 2015 - International League (IL1)
Lehigh Valley IronPigs News Release
Gabriel Lino's two-run double as part of a five-run fifth gave the Lehigh Valley IronPigs (32-48) the lead for good in a come-from-behind 12-8 win over the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (43-36) on Tuesday night at Coca-Cola Park.
Chase d'Arnaud came through later in the inning with an RBI single to extend the Lehigh Valley lead to 9-7 and three batters later, Tyler Henson made it 11-7 with a two-run shot; his first round-tripper of the season.
The IronPigs trailed 7-1 after two and a half innings and the comeback ties for the second largest in franchise history; the largest since July 30, 2014 at Rochester when Lehigh Valley trailed 6-0. The rally marks the biggest by the Pigs at Coca-Cola Park.
Pigs starter Anthony Vasquez (5.0 IP, 8 H, 7 R, 7 ER, 3 BB, 2 K) got the win to move his record to 4-3 on the year. LHP Adam Loewen (2.0 IP, H, 4 K) recorded the final six outs to notch his second save of the season.
RHP Chris Martin (1.2 IP, 5 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 3 BB, 2 K) took the loss for the RailRiders and drops to 0-1 on the year.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre took an early 4-0 lead with four runs in the first as Austin Romine hit a two-run homer, Ramon Flores delivered an RBI single and Rob Refsnyder grounded into a fielder's choice to drive home another run. It was Romine's sixth home run of the season.
Chris McGuiness' RBI double in the home half of the inning scored Brian Bogusevic and brought the IronPigs within 4-1.
Refsnyder's two-run single in the top of the second extended the RailRiders lead to 6-1.
Rob Segedin's solo shot in the top of third opened up a 7-1 advantage for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
The Pigs cut the lead to 7-4 with three runs in the bottom half of the frame as Aaron Altherr delivered a two-run single and Cord Phelps extended his hitting streak to six games with an RBI double.
RailRiders starter Joel De La Cruz (n/d) got a no-decision as he gave up the four runs on seven hits while walking one and fanning one over three innings of work.
Henson's two-out, two-run single in the home half of the fourth brought the IronPigs within a run at 7-6.
After Lehigh Valley took the lead, Romine delivered an RBI double off of RHP Hector Neris (2.0 IP, 2 H, R, ER, 2 BB, K) in the top of the seventh to cut the lead to 11-8. Neris was able to work his way out of a bases loaded, one-out jam in the inning to avoid any further damage.
Phelps' RBI single in the bottom of the eighth extended the Lehigh Valley lead to 12-8.
Seven different IronPigs had multi-hit games as part of a 17-hit attack: Altherr (3-5, 2 RBI, SB, R), Bogusevic (2-4, 2 R), d'Arnaud (2-5, 2B, RBI, 2 R), Henson (3-5, 2B, HR, 4 RBI, SB, 2 R), Lino (2-4, 2 2B, 2 RBI, R), McGuiness (2-4, 2B, RBI, 2 R) and Phelps (2-4, 2 RBI, R).
The series wraps up on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. as RHP Dustin McGowan (1-1, 6.00) gets the start for the Pigs against RailRiders RHP Jaron Long (5-5, 5.11).
