Halton's Walk-Off Double a Winner for Tides

June 30, 2015 - International League (IL1)
Norfolk Tides News Release

Sean Halton hit a two-run double with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, giving the Tides a 2-1 win over the Charlotte Knights Tuesday afternoon at Harbor Park.

After a scoreless first eight innings, Charlotte took the lead in the top of the ninth frame on a one-out solo home run by George Kottaras off of Eddie Gamboa (6-5). It was the only hit allowed by Gamboa, who worked four innings of relief in back of Zach Davies.

The Tides mounted the game-winning rally against Onelky Garcia (0-1) in the ninth, as Derrik Gibson worked a one-out walk to start the inning. Christian Walker then lined a single to center before a ground ball by Dariel Alvarez put runners on second and third with two outs. Halton then lofted a deep fly ball to the base of the wall in left field, scoring Gibson and Walker and giving Norfolk its seventh walk-off win of the season.

With the win, Norfolk (44-33) moved a half-game ahead of Charlotte (44-34) for first place in the IL South division.

Making his first start since being named to the MLB Futures Game on Thursday, Davies spun five shutout innings for the Tides but did not factor in the decision. The 22-year-old right-hander allowed just two hits and three walks while striking out one as he lowered his ERA to 2.75 through 15 outings (14 starts) this season.

Charlotte starter Terance Marin matched Davies - firing seven scoreless frames while striking out five. Over his five games (four starts) with the Knights, Marin has now thrown 29.0 shutout innings.

The two clubs wrap up their three-game series on Wednesday night at Harbor Park, with first pitch slated for 7:05. UVA product Tyler Wilson (3-4, 2.80) gets the start for Norfolk against right-hander Kyle Drabek (3-4, 2.85).

Notes: Earlier Tuesday, Tides broadcaster Pete Michaud was named to the radio broadcast team for the 2015 Triple-A All-Star Game...Christian Walker's 9th inning single extended his hitting streak to nine games, matching the longest by a Tides player this season...The one-run game was Norfolk's league-leading 34th of the season (The Tides are 20-14 in one-run affairs)...Halton's game-winning double was the only hit in the contest with a runner in scoring position, as the two teams combined to go 1-for-12.
