Tides Put on Offensive Showcase in Win over Charlotte

July 3, 2021 - International League (IL)
Norfolk Tides News Release

In front of a season-high 10,282 fans, the Tides put on an offensive show by defeating Charlotte, 8-2, with the help of three home runs. They also reached safely 18 times with 11 hits, six walks and a strikeout wild pitch.

Norfolk was able to score a run to start the game in the first. Mason McCoy led off with a walk and Jahmai Jones singled, who both advanced on a wild pitch to put runners on second and third base. McCoy would score on a Tyler Nevin groundout to give the Tides an early, 1-0, lead.

Zach Remillard responded immediately for Charlotte with a leadoff home run to tie the game at 1-1. Norfolk starter Kevin Smith would go on to retire the next eight batters until he faced Remillard again in the third inning and walked him. Luis González then singled to put runners on second and third base, but Smith would get out of the jam by striking out Yermin Mercedes, Smith's sixth strikeout of the game.

Before Charlotte threatened in the bottom half of the third, McCoy connected for his third home run of the season to give the Tides a 2-1 lead. It was the first home run for him since May 30 vs. Charlotte.

The Tides would explode for three runs in the fourth inning. With the bases loaded, McCoy came through again by knocking in two with a double. Jones would get an RBI single himself to put the Tides up, 5-1. McCoy finished the game 2-for-4 with two runs, a double, home run, three RBI and a walk. Jones reached five times, going 3-for-3 with an RBI and two walks.

Smith would finish his night on the mound after the fifth inning, allowing that leadoff home run as the only run given up. He gave up two hits and one run while striking nine, matching a career-high. The last time he had nine punchouts was back on July 1, 2019 in High-A with St. Lucie against the Charlotte Stone Crabs.

Brett Cumberland scored the next two runs for the Tides, hitting a moonshot home run in the fifth inning to left field and then snuck another homer down the right field line just over the 315 ft. sign. It was his third multi-home run game of his career, with his last time coming in a rain-shortened game on April 4, 2017 with High-A Florida vs. Daytona. He'd tack on one more hit, an RBI double in the ninth, to finish the night 3-for-5 with two runs, a double, two home runs and three RBI.

The Knights did scratch a run across the plate but that's all they could muster as Norfolk defeated Charlotte, 8-2. They play their series finale Sunday night on July 4th, where LHP Alexander Wells (4-3, 5.63) will start for the Tides and will face RHP Alex McRae (2-2, 4.88) of the Knights. First pitch at 6:05 p.m.
