Thunderbirds Defeat the Toros

Austin, TX Jan. 27, 2011 -The New Mexico Thunderbirds defeated the Austin Toros 104-93 on Thursday night at Cedar Park Center. Carldell "Squeaky" Johnson led the Toros in scoring with 20 points. A crowd of nearly 2,700 were on hand to support the Toros in the first of two home games against the Thunderbirds.

The game started off slow for the Toros with the Thunderbirds going on a 6-0 run in the first three minutes of the game. However, James Anderson and Lance Thomas combined for 14 first quarter points to keep the Toros close and eventually took a 22-21 lead at the end of the quarter. The Thunderbirds, behind the scoring of Marcus Hubbard and Dar Tucker, regained the lead in the second quarter and led the Toros 42-35 at the half.

The Toros struggled from the floor early in the third quarter, but picked up their defense resulting in a 10-0 run tying the game 62-62 with 2:48 remaining in the third. Turnovers and 45 percent shooting from the field plagued the Toros in the fourth and Dar Tucker led the Thunderbirds to victory over the Toros.

Dar Tucker of the Thunderbirds led all scorers with 25 points. Marcus Hubbard and Adulai Jalloh followed, both scoring 19 points. Carldell "Squeaky" Johnson led the Toros in scoring with 20 points and was followed by San Antonio Spurs assigned player James Anderson (17) and Lance Thomas (15).

The Austin Toros (11-14) and the New Mexico Thunderbirds (13-13) will face off again Saturday, January 28 at Cedar Park Center at 12:00 p.m. The Toros will complete their four-game home stretch on Sunday, January 30 when they face the Utah Flash.
