Iowa Wolves News Release
DES MOINES, IA - Chicago Bulls assignee James Johnson scored a game high 28 points, including a thunderous tomahawk dunk that sent fans into a frenzy, as the Iowa Energy defeated the Rio Grande Valley Vipers 138-119 Friday night in Des Moines.
Johnson made 10 of 14 shots on the night, but it was his 3rd quarter dunk that everyone will remember. With Iowa up 95-94 and 1:32 remaining in the 3rd quarter, Johnson corralled a rebound and led a four on one fast break. With a defender between him and the basket, Johnson took off from a step inside the free throw line and smashed the ball through the rim. Minutes later, Energy fans were still standing and applauding the play.
Iowa jumped out to a 75-63 lead at halftime in a fast-paced affair. Rio Grande Valley opened the 3rd quarter on a 12-0 run to cut Iowa's lead to one. The two teams exchanged buckets for several minutes before the Energy used a late 6-2 run to take a 101-96 lead into the final stanza.
The Energy, who improved to 20-7 on the season, opened the 4th quarter with an 11-2 run including several basketball by reserve guard Stefhon Hannah, to take a commanding 112-98 lead. Rio Grande Valley would get no closer than 11 points the rest of the way as the Energy coasted to the victory.
With the win, the Energy have now been in 1st place in their division for 127 consecutive games.
Newly acquired Marqus Blakely, who the Energy received Monday in a trade with Bakersfield, finished with 25 points on a perfect 10-10 performance from the field. Curtis Stinson added 18 points and 12 assists on the night.
Rio Grande Valley was led by Jeff Adrien, who finished with 24 points and 14 rebounds. The loss drops the Vipers to 17-8 on the year.
The two teams will have a rematch Saturday at Wells Fargo Arena at 7pm. Tickets are available at www.dahlstickets.com, by calling 564-8550 or at the arena box office.
