Trenton Thunder News Release
(Trenton, NJ)- Thunder Catcher Joe Muich had the game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning to give Trenton a 2-1 walk-off win over the Binghamton Mets on Friday night from Waterfront Park. Trenton increased its Northern Division lead to 7 1/2 games over Binghamton.
With the game tied at 1-1 in the ninth inning, Thunder Third Baseman Chris Malec walked with one out against Binghamton reliever Eddie Camacho (3-3). After Left Fielder James Cooper struck out for the second out, Malec advanced to second base on a wild pitch. Camacho intentionally walked Right Fielder Edwar Gonzalez and walked Pinch Hitter Carlos Mendoza to load the bases, which put the winning run at third base. Former Thunder reliever Tim Lavigne came on for Camacho and gave up the game-winning single on a three-two count. The walk-off win was Trenton's first since a 3-2 win over Reading on June 8th at Waterfront Park.
Thunder reliever Eric Wordekemper (3-2) earned the win by going 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. Thunder starting pitcher George Kontos received a no-decision. He allowed only four hits and one earned run in 6 1/3 innings. The only run allowed by Kontos came in the seventh inning on an error by Malec. Trenton (57-36) scored the game's first run on an RBI single by Designated Hitter Austin Jackson in the third inning. Jackson finished the game 3 x 3 with an RBI and a walk. Trenton is now a season-high 21 games over .500.
Trenton and Binghamton will play the second game of the four-game series on Saturday night. LHP Chase Wright (7-2, 3.36) will start for Trenton against Binghamton LHP Jon Niese (5-7, 3.30). Game time is set for 7:05 PM.
