
'Dogs continue to struggle

(New Britain, CT) - New Britain's Brock Peterson smacked a run-scoring double in the bottom of the eighth inning, giving the New Britain Rock Cats (39-53) a 4-3 win over the Portland Sea Dogs (50-41) on Friday night at New Britain Stadium.
Portland has dropped three of their last four and suffered just their second loss at New Britain Stadium this season.
Armando Gabino (4-4) worked a 1/3 of an inning, fanning Iggy Suarez in the eighth inning to earn the win. Mike James (2-3) allowed the Peterson double and took the loss for the 'Dogs. Ben Julianel allowed two baserunners in the ninth inning but Zach Daeges lined out to centerfield on a 3-1 pitch to end the game.
The Sea Dogs had 9 of 11 hits with two outs and grabbed a 3-2 lead in the sixth inning with four straight two out hits off Anthony Swarzak. Sandy Madera started the rally with an infield-single and scored on a run-scoring double by John Otness. Jorge Jimenez nailed an RBI triple off the right-field wall and scored on Iggy Suarez's single.
Swarzak fired five scoreless innings for New Britain until Portland's 3-spot in the sixth. The righty yielded eight hits, three runs, two walks and fanned three.
Kris Johnson took the no-decision but notched his 7th quality start of the season. New Britain tied the game at three in the seventh inning on Toby Gardenhire's RBI single. Johnson allowed a double to start the inning and fanned David Winfree and Felix Molina before the game-tying hit.
For the night, Johnson worked a season-high 6.2 IP on seven hits and three runs. The lefty established a Double-A high with eight strikeouts and struck out the side in the sixth inning.
The Rock Cats scored the first runs of the series, putting together three straight two-out hits in the fourth inning. Winfree lined a 2-run triple down the right-field line to score Danny Valencia and Erik Lis.
Jimenez finished 3-for-4 for the 'Dogs, picking up his first Double-A multi-hit game. Jeff Corsaletti went 3-for-5 and Aaron Bates added 2 singles.
On Saturday night the two teams will play a doubleheader at New Britain Stadium beginning at 5:35 PM. Catch all the action on the U.S. Cellular Sea Dogs Radio Network beginning at 5:10 PM.
Notes...Jeff Corsaletti extended his hitting streak to 14 straight games...Kris Johnson remains unbeaten on the road...Jorge Jimenez picked up the team's 18th triple of the season.
