J.P. Arencibia homers, drives in three in 18-5 loss at Connecticut

Norwich, CT- Designated hitter J.P. Arencibia went 3-for-5 with a home run and three runs batted in, but the Fisher Cats fell 18-5 at Connecticut before 4,703 Friday night at Dodd Stadium.

New Hampshire took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on the first of Arencibia's three RBI. Eric Nielsen (3-for-5, 2B, 2 R, RBI) doubled and scored on an Arencibia single.

Connecticut tied the game with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Antoan Richardson (2-for-6, 2 R, RBI) singled, moved to second on a balk and scored on a single by Pablo Sandoval (4-for-5, 2 R, 3 RBI) to tie the game at 1-1.

The Defenders took control of the game with five runs in the bottom of the second inning against Fisher Cats starter Kenny Rodriguez. Dave Maroul (2-for-4, 2B, 3R, 2 RBI) doubled in two runs and Richardson, Sandoval and Adam Witter (3-for-6, R, 3 RBI) added RBI singles to open a 6-1 lead. Rodriguez (1-2) left after two innings in which he gave up six runs on eight hits, walking one and striking out one.

In the top of the fourth inning, David Smith singled, moved to second on a Kyle Phillips single, and scored on a Chris Gutierrez (2-for-3, 2B, R, RBI) double to make it 6-2.

The Defenders added an RBI single by Witter in the bottom of the fourth against Seth Overbey to take a 7-2 lead over New Hampshire.

Arencibia hit a two-out solo home run in the top of the fifth inning, his sixth, to close the gap to 7-3. The home run came off Defenders starter Garrett Broshuis (9-6), who worked the first five innings for his ninth win. He allowed nine hits, three runs, and one walk while striking out five.

The Defenders scored seven more runs on five hits in the bottom of the sixth inning against Orlando Roman. Two of the runs came across on a double by Kyle Haines (2-for-4, 2B, 4 RBI) who then added a two-run single off Aaron Harang, part of a four-run seventh inning for Connecticut.

New Hampshire scored its final two runs in the top of the ninth inning against Kelvin Pichardo. Gutierrez led off with a walk and scored on a Nielsen double. Arencibia then picked up his third RBI with a single, scoring Nielsen.

The four-game series continues Saturday night at Dodd Stadium against the Connecticut Defenders. RHP Brandon Magee (1-11, 5.46) starts for New Hampshire against Connecticut RHP Joey Martinez (6-6, 2.36). Radio coverage with Bob Lipman begins at 6:15pm on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network.

The 2008 Northeast Delta Dental Eastern League All-Star Game takes place at Merchantsauto.com Stadium on Wednesday, July 16 at 7:05pm. Gates open at 3:00pm.
