Connecticut Defenders News Release

NORWICH, CT- The Defenders won their fourteenth total and sixth straight against New Hampshire in an 18-5 rout over the Fisher Cats on Friday night.

Garrett Broshuis did what he had to do to get his ninth victory of the year- last five innings. In his five frames of work, Broshuis gave up three earned runs on nine base hits, walked one and struck out five Cats.

The offense did the rest. Pablo Sandoval started off meekly in the first with an RBI single in the first as the Defs tied things up 1-1. The second inning was a little bit more eventful.

In the second, the Defenders batted around as Dave Maroul laced a two-run double, Antoan Richardson ripped a run-scoring single, Sandoval smacked an RBI single and Adam Witter capped the frame off with a single of his own to push the lead to 6-1.

One run for both squads in the fourth, the Cats plated another in the fifth and the Defs exploded in the sixth.

In the home half of six, Connecticut turned the offense to full throttle. When the third out had been recorded, seven runs crossed the dish. Three RBI singles, two doubles brought runs home and the Defenders ballooned the advantage to 14-3.

For some reason, the Defs weren't done. In the seventh, they continued to bomb on New Hampshire. Five singles allotted four more runs as Connecticut added two safeties to make it 18-3.

Kelvin Pichardo would toss a rocky ninth and give up two runs but the cushion was there for error. Sandoval finished with four hits in five at-bats and 3 RBIs, Witter went 3-for-6 with three runs driven in and Kyle Haines brought four men to the plate and scored twice in the whooping.

The Fisher Cats will try and figure out the streaking Defenders on Saturday night at the Dodd at 6:35pm. Tickets are available for the contest at (860) 887-7962 or by visiting the website and clicking on tickets at www.ctdefenders.com.
