(Trenton, NJ) - Three clutch hits by the Trenton Thunder (45-32) offense provided plenty in a 3-1 victory over the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (46-29) Tuesday night at Waterfront Park. Another solid outing by Manny Banuelos paced the Thunder early, and Trenton's bullpen shut the door in the final four frames. Corban Joseph had a three-hit night, driving in a run for Trenton, who have won five straight over New Hampshire and five of six games overall.
The Thunder had an extremely difficult time figuring out Fisher Cat starter Jesse Litsch, appearing on a Major League rehab assignment. After retiring his first ten batters, Litsch finally surrendered a one-out double to Corban Joseph in the bottom of the fourth. Then, with two outs in the inning, Bradley Suttle lined a single up the middle to score Joseph from second and give Trenton a 1-0 advantage.
After New Hampshire tied the score with an Adeiny Hechavarria solo homerun in the fifth, the Thunder and Fisher Cats were tied 1-1 heading to the seventh inning. Suttle and Rob Lyerly both doubled to begin the frame, bringing in a run to give the Thunder a 2-1 lead.
Trenton added an important insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning when Joseph singled home Ray Kruml, who had just tripled, to provide Trenton a 3-1 lead. Kruml's triple extended his season-long hitting streak to 12 games.
Solid pitching was the theme for the Thunder for all nine innings in the win with the only New Hampshire run coming on the Hechavarria solo homerun. Starter Manny Banuelos hurled five, strong frames, and Thunder relievers Pat Venditte, newcomer Josh Romanski and Alan Horne combined to hurl four scoreless innings. Romanski, called-up from Tampa Tuesday, picked-up a hold in his professional debut as a reliever, and converted starting pitcher Alan Horne shut down the Fisher Cats in the ninth for his first professional save.
Looking for the three-game sweep over the Fisher Cats, the Thunder will welcome Phil Hughes back to the Waterfront Park mound on Wednesday for his second Major League rehab assignment with the team in 2011. Wednesday's game is at 12:05 PM and will serve as the series finale with New Hampshire, who will send RHP Chad Jenkins (1-1, 4.05) to the mound. Tune into the game on 91.3 WTSR-FM and trentonthunder.com. The SBLI Pre-Game Show with Jay Burnham and Hank Fuerst begins at 11:45 AM.
