Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release

Binghamton emerged victorious 6-3 in the lidlifter of its doubleheader at Erie Tuesday night before falling 4-2 in the nightcap at Jerry Uht Park. Raul Reyes paced the Game One victory with a 3-for-3 showing, including his fifth home run of the season.

Binghamton (28-48) climbed on top in the first inning of Game One. Jordany Valdespin dropped a perfect bunt down the third base line to reach against starter Jay Voss. Josh Satin followed him up with a gapper to left-center that plated Valdespin from first to give the B-Mets an early 1-0 lead. It was Satin's team-leading 22nd double of the season.

Robert Carson aided the SeaWolves in tying the score in the second. With the bases loaded and two outs, Carson walked Jamie Johnson to force in the tying run.

The B-Mets got that run back in the third inning, however. Matt den Dekker led off with a triple off the right-field wall. Two batters later, Satin chased him home with an RBI single to center past the drawn-in infield, making it 2-1.

Voss' struggles continued in the fourth. Allan Dykstra, Salomon Manriquez and Reyes all reached on singles to load the bases with one out in the fourth. Jose Coronado came through with a fourth single to push home Dykstra, which upped the lead to two. After den Dekker struck out, Valdespin hit a routine groundball to third, but Francisco Martinez misfired with his throw to first, which allowed two more runs to score. This put the B-Mets comfortably in front 5-1.

Erie (38-39) got to Carson in the fourth and knocked the southpaw from the game. After the first two hitters reached on singles, Carson got Johnson to pop out to short. However, Gustavo Nunez singled to load the bases and Francisco Martinez doubled to right, which brought the SeaWolves within two, 5-3. Carson would strike out Deik Scram looking before exiting in favor of Erik Turgeon. Turgeon got Rawley Bishop to fly out to right, which stranded the tying runs on base.

Carson struggled through 3 2/3 innings. He allowed three runs on seven hits and walked three. Where Carson lacked, Turgeon did not. The righty fired the final 3 1/3 innings in scoreless fashion to secure his fourth win.

Reyes provided the final 6-3 margin with his homer leading off the sixth. He smoked a first-pitch fastball from Rob Waite and sent it out of the yard to right-center.

The B-Mets jumped ahead early in the second game as well. Dykstra stroked a solo homer off lefty Ramon Garcia in the second inning to put Binghamton on top 1-0.

The SeaWolves answered in the bottom of the second and would not look back. Bishop sauntered to the plate with one out and knocked an 0-2 fastball from starter Ricky Brooks over the wall in right to tie the game. It was Bishop's fifth bomb of the season. Erie was not done, however. With two outs, Justin Henry reached on a fielding error by first baseman Travis Ozga. This extended the inning for Brandon Douglas, who doubled Henry home to put the SeaWolves ahead for good. Jeff Kunkel rounded out the three-run outburst with an RBI single to left-center, making it 3-1.

Brooks was hung with the loss. He allowed four runs - two earned - on four hits over a season-long four innings. Garcia fell an out short of qualifying for the win. The southpaw allowed two runs over 4 2/3 innings. Austin Wood followed him and picked up the win with 1 1/3 innings of relief and Chance Ruffin fired the ninth in scoreless fashion for his 10th save.

Binghamton wraps up its road trip with the finale of the four-game set with Erie Wednesday at 12:05 PM. RHP Collin McHugh (1-1, 3.60) gets the call for the B-Mets opposite RHP Mark Sorenson (6-5, 6.06). The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pre-Game Show begins at 11:50 AM on ESPN 1360 WYOS.
