
Thunder sweep through South, inch closer to first

THUNDER POUND RAYZ- The Thunder scored a CHL season-high five first period goals and rolled to a 6-2 win over Corpus Christi on Thursday Night at the Kansas Coliseum. Joe Blaznek led the way with his second hat trick of the season, while Travis Clayton, Tyler Liebel and Chad Mazurak also chipped in goals. The Thunder remained a perfect 4-0-0 all-time versus Corpus Christi.
FLICK SHUTS OUT SAINTS- Chad Mazurak scored two goals and Jason Flick stopped all 28 shots, leading the Thunder to a 3-0 shutout win at San Angelo on Friday. Nate Metcalf also scored for Wichita, who defeated the Saints for the first time ever (1-2-1). The Thunder have now defeated every CHL team at least once, with the exception of Austin (0-3-0). The Thunder will play the Ice Bats twice in February.
CARTER HELPS THUNDER EDGE JACKALOPES- Rookie Mike Carter scored an amazing goal with just 1:42 remaining, snapping a 1-1 tie and helping the Thunder to a 3-1 win in Odessa on Saturday. Veteran Jason Duda scored two unassisted goals, as Jason Flick won his third start in as many nights. Wichita's perfect week moved them to within five points of the first place Colorado Eagles, who have won 10 in a row.
DUDA CONTINUES, CLAYTON ENDS SCORING STREAK- Jason Duda picked up four points last week, including his 600th pro point, extending his scoring streak to 16 straight games. Duda, who leads the CHL with 72 points and 50 assists, also scored his 239th career goal, moving ahead of Alex Kholomeyev for eighth place in CHL history. Veteran Travis Clayton was held scoreless in both San Angelo and Odessa this weekend, snapping his scoring streak at a CHL season-high 20 games. Clayton ranks second in the CHL with 67 points, 11 power play goals and seven game-winners. He also ranks fourth in the CHL for both goals (27) and assists (40).
BIG WEEKEND AHEAD- A lot will be going on this weekend at the Kansas Coliseum, as the Thunder host two of the CHL's hottest teams. The Tulsa Oilers, 9-2-1 in their last 12 games, come to town Friday for Local Food Pantry Night. Fans can get half-price tickets with the donation of any non-perishable food item. Saturday is Nascar Night, sponsored by the Kansas Army National Guard and a battle for the number one seed in the CHL with Colorado. Fans can get $3 off tickets by wearing Nascar gear and can see the #16 car of Greg Biffle. Both a Tank and Blackhawk Helicopter are also expected to be on display at the game.
THUNDERBOLTS- Rookie Derek Parker leads the CHL with 28 major penalties and 282 penalty minutes...The Thunder leads the CHL on the power play, at 21.2%...The Thunder leads the CHL with 53 first period goals and 146 total goals...Wichita ranks second in the CHL for fewest goals allowed, at just 2.60 per game...Paul Esdale leads all CHL defensemen with 15 goals...At 16-6-0, the Thunder need to win five of their last eight road games to break the Thunder single-season record of 20...Mike Carter will be the guest on the Thunder TV Coach's Show, taped every Monday at 5:00 PM at Heroes in Old Town...The show will air on Saturday at Noon on Cox Cable Channel 22, sponsored by Park City.
