Saints still number one in South

San Angelo Saints News Release

San Angelo, TX – The Saints were able to only walk away with 2 points from this past weekend, but the two points were enough to keep them atop the Southwest Division as well as the Southern Conference with 47 points (22-14-3) and winning percentage of .603. The Saints played host the Wichita Thunder Friday night in front of over 4,000 Saints fans, but were unable to get anything on the board as Wichita’s goaltender, Jason Flick, recorded his 2nd shutout of the season as the Thunder blanked San Angelo 3-0. The Saints then got on the bus and headed to New Mexico to play against the Scorpions Saturday night. Trevor Weisgerber, who was filling in for Saints Head Coach Ray Edwards while he was away on personal business, was eager to come away from the weekend with a 1-1 coaching record. The Scorpions got on the scoreboard first and kept it 2-0 until the third period when Bret DeCecco was able to record a pair of goals to tie the game up and send it into overtime and eventually a shoot out, where Matt Frick put the game winner past New Mexico goalie Miguel Beaudry to give the Saints two points and a well deserved victory. During the game both Saints forwards David Silverstone and Lyle Steenbergen had to be removed from the ice due to injuries, while Saints goalie Scott Reid was run into his own net by one of the Scorpions.

Reid and Steenbergen are ok and will be in the lineup for tomorrow nights game versus the Memphis RiverKings. Silverstone will not play as of today and both Trevor Weisgerber and Justin Van Parys, who have been on injured reserve, are questionable for return in tomorrow nightÂ’s match up.

The Saints, while not only staying on top in the standings, were in a charitable mood Friday night as they auctioned off the special Angelo State University jerseys, that featured Angelo State’s school colors (yellow & blue), the team wore during Friday night’s contest. The auction was huge success, with the Saints being able to donate over $6,000 to Angelo State for a general scholarship fund. “It is always nice to have specialty jerseys,” stated Saints President and General Manager Jim Cook. “It is even better when you can auction them off and the money goes to great cause.”

The Saints host the Memphis RiverKings tomorrow night at the Sanctuary before hitting the road and traveling to Amarillo on Thursday and New Mexico on Saturday. Also a friendly reminder the Saints February 6th game has been moved to Monday, February 7th at 7 PM. To get tickets or for more information, please call the Saints office at (325) 653-9577 today.
