Corpus Christi IceRays News Release
WHAT A NIGHT! â In front of the largest crowd in franchise history, the Mudbugs stunned the Laredo Bucks with three late goals to claim a 4-3 win on an incredible Friday night at the CenturyTel Center. Steve Simoes of Laredo quieted the sellout crowd of 12,430 just 1:45 into the game to make it 1-0 Bucks, but Chris Brassard responded on the power play two minutes later with a one-timer from the left circle. Laredo's power play then went to work to build their lead as Mark Wires and Jeff Bes made it 3-1. The Bucks would work on another power play opportunity later in the frame, but Dan Wildfong energized the record crowd with a shorthanded goal at 9:25 to give the Mudbugs the momentum in the contest. With just 2:21 remaining in the third period, Shane Palahicky found a loose puck in the slot and wristed it past Bucks goaltender David Guerrera for the equalizer. That would set the stage for Dan Wildfong and the game-winning goal from the bottom of the right circle and a quick shot over the shoulder of Guerrera with just twenty seconds left in regulation to send the Mudbugs fans into a frenzy.
SHOOTOUT SHUTOUT FOR CARROLL â Ken Carroll stopped 27 shots plus four in a shootout as the Mudbugs defeated the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees 1-0 on Saturday night at the CenturyTel Center. The win was the Mudbugs' tenth in a row on home ice and improved their overall record to 24-10-4 this season. The game remained scoreless after sixty minutes of regulation time, despite each team working on power play chances and also trading shorthanded opportunities. Neither team could crack the two netminders and the game went into overtime at 0-0. With 1:08 left in OT, the Mudbugs were called for having too many skaters on the ice but Rio Grande Valley failed to score on the power play chance at the end of overtime. In the shootout, Scott Sheppard scored in the first round and Chris Brassard finished the Killer Bees in Round 4 after Ken Carroll made four impressive saves on Rio Grande Valley shooters.
