New Mexico Scorpions News Release

ALBUQUERQUE – The New Mexico Scorpions bring class in session tomorrow, Tuesday, Feb. 1 as they host the Lubbock Cotton Kings in the team's annual School Day game. Over 6,000 students from area schools in grades 3-5 are expected to attend, including all 2,200 students from those grades in the Rio Rancho School District. With teachers and parent chaperones added, tomorrow's game is expected to be close to a sellout.

The program for tomorrow includes a pregame "Chalk Talk" session with Scorpions coach Bill McDonald and several players, who will teach students the rules of hockey and the equipment needed to play. In addition, Rio Rancho students and teachers will be given a copy of the team's Power Play Learning curriculum, which will give students hockey-based exercises in reading, writing, math, geography and citizenship.

"We would like to thank all of the schools who will be participating in this field trip game," said Scorpions Senior Vice President/General Manager Geoff Kent. "It will be fun for the students, but also educational.

"The response from Rio Rancho in particular is very encouraging. We would like to thank Dr. Sue Cleveland and the Rio Rancho School District for helping to make this a beneficial learning experience for the students, by giving their teachers an opportunity to use the learning materials we developed for this event in the classroom."

Faceoff is 11:05 a.m., and the game will be broadcast on Sports Radio 610 The Sports Animal (KNML-AM) and on the Internet at www.scorpionshockey.com and www.broadcastmonsters.com beginning at 10:50 a.m. with the Voice of the Scorpions Mike Sheehan.

The Scorpions are back in action at Tingley Coliseum this Friday, Feb. 4 against the Amarillo Gorillas and Saturday, Feb. 5 against the San Angelo Saints. Both games start at 7:05 p.m., and Saturday's game is Roman Meal Youth Jersey Night. The first 1,500 kids age 14 and under through the doors will receive a free Scorpions youth jersey courtesy of Roman Meal.
