Trenton Thunder News Release
(Trenton, NJ) - The Trenton Thunder (58-57) scored the game's final four runs but fell to the Binghamton Mets (48-68) 6-5 on Tuesday night at Waterfront Park. In game one of a three-game series, Rob Lyerly's eighth inning, three-run homerun kick-started a late comeback for the Thunder that fell eventually fell short. Trenton loses for the sixth time in seven games in August and will need to win the final two games of this series to avoid the team's fifth series loss in seven series in the second half of the Eastern League season.
The Thunder first graced the scoreboard at Waterfront Park on Tuesday night in the bottom of the fifth inning, a frame where the team did not record a hit. Jose Gil was hit by a pitch to begin the inning, advancing to second on a wild pitch and third by tagging on a fly ball. With one out and Gil at third, Austin Krum grounded out to second base to give Trenton their first run of the game. Through five frames, Binghamton led Trenton 3-1.
The B-Mets then scored the game's next three runs and took a 6-1 lead with them to the bottom of the eighth inning. With one out, the Thunder got back-to-back singles from Jose Pirela and Corban Joseph. Then, on the first pitch he saw from Binghamton reliever Tobi Stoner, Rob Lyerly hammered a three-run homerun over the wall in right field. Lyerly's fourth homerun of the season cut the B-Met lead to just 6-4.
Damon Sublett's tripled to begin the bottom of the ninth inning and scored later with two outs to make it 6-5. However, that was all of the offense for the Thunder as the B-Mets held off their late charge. Allowing five runs in 5.2 innings, Graham Stoneburner received his first loss for the Thunder since April 9 and his first since returning to the team from the Disabled List.
In the middle game of a two-game set, the Thunder will take on the Binghamton Mets Wednesday night at 7:05 PM at Waterfront Park. Thunder Manager Tony Franklin will give the pearl to LHP Shaeffer Hall (10-5, 4.23), while the B-Mets will counter with RHP Matt Harvey (1-3, 4.93).
