
Aeros Pitching Staff Grounds Sea Dogs' Offense

Portland, Maine- The Akron Aeros pitching staff grounded the Sea Dogs' offense as Paolo Espino and three relievers combined to shutout the Portland Sea Dogs 3-0 Tuesday night at Hadlock Field to even the series at one game apiece. Meanwhile the Aeros offense sent two balls into orbit, blasting two solo home runs en route to the victory.
Akron struck out 15 Sea Dog batters and limited the Portland offense to six hits.
Portland starter Brock Huntzinger (5-10) pitched well holding the Aeros to one run on four hits in 5.1 innings. Three of the four hits were infield singles, while the fourth left the ballpark when Ben Copeland launched his fifth home run of the season in the fourth to give the Indians affiliate a 1-0 lead.
Josh Fields made his Hadlock Field debut in relief of Huntzinger. Fields acquired by the Red Sox in the Erik Bedard trade from Seattle allowed one hit; a solo home run to John Drennen, his fourth of the year. Fields struck out two and walked two in two innings.
Espino improved to 6-0 tossing five shutout innings, holding the Sea Dogs to four hits. He struck out seven and walked one lowering his ERA to 2.44.
The Sea Dogs best chance to score came in the seventh when the first two batters reached. Mitch Dening walked and Dan Butler followed with a single. Eric Berger got out of the jam retiring the next three including strikeouts of Jeremy Hazelbaker and Alex Hassan. Berger tossed two shutout innings with three strikeouts.
Rob Bryson struck out two and did not allow a hit in the eighth for Akron.
The Aeros scored an unearned run in the ninth off Cesar Cabral Jordan Henry had a bunt single and a throwing error by catcher Mark Wagner allowed Donnie Webb to score. Henry was the only player on either side to collect a multi-hit game with a 2-for-5 performance.
Cory Burns earned his league leading 31st save pitching a perfect ninth.
The two clubs with conclude the series with a 12:00 Noon start on Thursday afternoon at Hadlock Field. Right-handed pitcher Chris Balcom-Miller (2-5, 4.82) will start for the Sea Dogs.
