SeaWolves Strike out 14 But Fall to Fisher Cats

The Erie pitching staff struck out 14 hitters on Wednesday afternoon at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium but the 'Wolves were shut out by the Fisher Cats 8-0 in the middle game of a three-game series.

The Fisher Cats struck in the bottom of the second against Erie starter Jay Voss. With one out, Yan Gomes walked and Mark Sobolewski singled putting runners on the corners. John Tolisano hit a sacrifice fly to left, plating Gomes for a 1-0 lead. Jonathan Diaz followed with an RBI double scoring Sobolewski for a 2-0 Fisher Cats edge.

New Hampshire added to its lead in the bottom of the third. Anthony Gose led off and belted his 12th home run. The solo shot to right made it 3-0. Moises Sierra followed with a single. With two outs, Gomes singled to move Sierra into scoring position and he scored on a Sobolewski hit for a 4-0 lead.

In the sixth, the Fisher Cats loaded the bases on reliever Robbie Weinhardt. Sobolewski walked, Tolisano singled and Diaz walked. Adeiny Hechavarria hit into a fielder's choice, scoring Sobolewski for a 5-0 lead.

The Fisher Cats again added to their lead in the bottom of the seventh. Travis d'Arnaud led off and singled and Gomez singled with one out. The runners advanced on a wild pitch and scored on a two-out Tolisano single off the wall in right for a 7-0 advantage.

New Hampshire added one more in the eighth inning on a Sierra solo home run, his 16th, with one out off of Ramon Garcia for an 8-0 lead.

Voss (7-6) tossed five innings, allowing four runs on eight hits with two walks while tying a season and career-high with eight strikeouts in the losing effort. It was the third time this season that Voss struck out eight in a game.

The SeaWolves look for the series win over the Fisher Cats on Thursday night at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium.7:05 First Pitch. Lefty Drew Smyly (2-0, 0.00 ERA) takes the mound for the SeaWolves against RHP Chad Jenkins (4-4, 4.17 ERA).
