B-Mets Capitalize on Trenton Miscues to Win 9-3

TRENTON, NJ - Binghamton tied a season-high with seven runs in the fifth inning, helped by four Trenton errors, as the B-Mets shellacked the Thunder 9-3 at Waterfront Park Wednesday night. One night removed from posting three hits, Mike Fisher delivered a 3-for-5 line with a double and an RBI.

Binghamton (49-68) got to Shaeffer Hall in the first inning to take the early lead. With two outs, Reese Havens reached with a single to center. Brahiam Maldonado moved him to second with a single to right and Fisher brought Havens home with a single to center.

The B-Mets added to its slim lead in the second with another run. Jon Malo started the uprising with an infield single. Juan Lagares pushed him to third with a blooper to right before Havens scored Malo on a single to right, which made it 2-0.

Trenton (58-58) got both runs back in the last of the second against starter Matt Harvey. Melky Mesa led off with a single. Zoilo Almonte followed and joined Mesa on base after hitting a single off the leg of Harvey, who appeared no worse for wear. Damon Sublett became the third straight hitter to reach and cut into the Binghamton lead with an RBI double to left. Jose Gil rounded out the comeback with an RBI groundout to short, which tied the score.

Harvey settled in from there and retired nine straight until Addison Maruszak reached with a double in the fifth.

Hall and the Thunder, however, hit the wall in the fifth inning. Havens led the frame off with a double to the gap in left-center. Maldonado joined Havens on base after reaching on the first of four Trenton errors. After Fisher flied out to right, Dusty Ryan was given a reprieve by Maruszak after hitting a tailor-made double-play ball to third that was mishandled by the infielder. With the bases loaded thanks to two errors and a double, Eric Campbell brought the go-ahead run home on an infield single. Niuman Romero pushed two more home with a groundball down the first-base line that was ruled an error on Rob Lyerly. Matt den Dekker followed with an RBI single to right that chased Hall from the game.

Chase Whitley replaced the starter, but the B-Mets were not done yet. With Malo at the plate, Romero and den Dekker took off on a double steal. Gil threw to third to try for Romero, but his throw went into left field, which allowed Romero to score. Malo put the icing on the cake shortly thereafter with a two-run homer to left off Whitley. When the dust had cleared, Binghamton had racked up seven runs to tie a season-best and lead 9-2.

The Thunder got its final run off Harvey in the bottom of the fifth. After Maruszak doubled, Jose Pirela stepped in with two outs and hit a seeing-eye single to center to plate the runner from second. Harvey finished the fifth and departed with the win in tow. He allowed three runs on six hits and struck out six without issuing a walk.

Hall drew his second straight loss for Trenton. He allowed eight runs - two earned - on 11 hits over 4 1/3 innings.

Rhiner Cruz, Brad Holt and Ricky Brooks combined to throw the final four innings in scoreless fashion to secure the winning margin. Binghamton outhit the Thunder 14-8 en route to the win. Havens and Campbell joined Fisher with three-hit performances.

Binghamton will try for its second road sweep of the season Thursday at 7:05 PM against the Thunder. RHP Brandon Moore (9-7, 3.93) will start opposite LHP Steve Garrison (3-8, 6.33). The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pre-Game Show begins at 6:50 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
